## Content

**Intro:** Section 179 lets a business deduct the cost of qualifying equipment in the year it is placed in service instead of depreciating it over many years. For a plant buying a CNC machine, press or inspection system, this calculator shows how the dollar limit, the phase-out and the taxable income cap combine.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the total cost of qualifying equipment placed in service during the year, the Section 179 limit and phase-out threshold for your tax year, and your taxable business income before the deduction. Set the combined marginal tax rate to see savings. The primary result is the deduction you can take now, with the leftover basis and any amount carried forward shown below it. Use the chart to see how the deduction behaves as purchases rise past the phase-out.

#### How the limits work together

**Body:** The deduction is the smallest of three amounts: total cost of qualifying property, the dollar limit reduced by the amount by which purchases exceed the phase-out threshold, and taxable business income. Because the reduction is dollar for dollar, a company buying far above the threshold may lose the deduction entirely, which is why the chart falls to zero at high spend. Amounts disallowed only because of the income limit carry forward to later years.

**Bullets:**

- Cost of qualifying property placed in service
- Dollar limit less the phase-out reduction
- Taxable business income, no deduction can create a loss
- Disallowed amounts carry forward

#### Section 179 and bonus depreciation

**Body:** Section 179 and bonus depreciation overlap but differ. Section 179 is elective by asset, limited by income and phased out at high spend. Bonus depreciation has no income limit and is applied to remaining basis, but its percentage and eligibility depend on current law and the date the property was acquired and placed in service. Many manufacturers use Section 179 for selected assets and bonus or MACRS for the rest. Model both with your advisor before year end.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** The mistakes seen most often are counting property that is not placed in service by December 31, ignoring the income limit, buying personal-use vehicles that have special caps, and failing to match tax and book asset records. Fixed asset modules in SAP, Oracle, Dynamics and Epicor should carry the in-service date, tax class and cost basis for each machine so the Section 179 election is traceable to the asset register.

**Cta:** Netray can help reconcile your ERP fixed asset register with tax records, so equipment placed in service this year is easy to identify and support.

**Faq:**

#### What equipment qualifies for Section 179?

**Answer:** Generally tangible business property such as machinery, tooling, computers and certain software, used mostly for business and placed in service in the tax year. Land and buildings do not qualify, though some building improvements can. Your advisor should confirm specific assets, especially vehicles and property placed in service late in the year.

#### Does the equipment have to be new?

**Answer:** No. Used equipment can qualify if it is new to you and bought from an unrelated party. Equipment acquired from a related party or in certain exchanges may not qualify, so check the facts before relying on the deduction.

#### What happens if I buy more than the phase-out threshold?

**Answer:** The deduction shrinks by the amount of the excess and can reach zero. In that case you may still use bonus depreciation or regular MACRS, which are not subject to the same phase-out. This is why high-capex plants often model both approaches.

#### Can I use Section 179 to create a loss?

**Answer:** No. The deduction cannot exceed taxable business income for the year. Any amount you cannot use because of this limit is carried forward to future years, subject to the same rules, so it is not lost.
