## Content

**Intro:** Material is often 30 to 60 percent of a sheet metal part price, and yield decides how much of each purchased sheet becomes parts. This calculator shows utilization, scrap value and net material cost per part from the figures on a nest report.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the sheet size and thickness you buy, choose the alloy, and type the delivered price per pound. Take parts per sheet from the nesting report and the net part area from the flat pattern. Set the scrap price your recycler pays and the share of skeleton scrap you really reuse as remnant. The result shows sheet weight, utilization, scrap credit and net cost per part. Sweep the chart to see the cost effect of improving the nest from, say, 24 to 38 parts per sheet.

**Bullets:**

- Use the true bought-in sheet size, not the nominal size.
- Leave remnant at zero if offcuts are not tracked in inventory.
- Run each alloy and gauge separately for mixed-material jobs.

#### Formulas and assumptions

**Body:** Sheet weight is length times width times thickness times density, using 0.2836 lb per cubic inch for carbon steel, 0.289 for 304 stainless and 0.0975 for 6061 aluminum. Utilization equals parts per sheet times net part area, divided by sheet area. Scrap weight is sheet weight times one minus utilization. The credit values recovered remnant at full sheet price and the rest at scrap price. Net material cost per part is sheet cost minus credit, divided by parts per sheet. Density values are standard handbook figures; confirm against your mill certificates for critical weight work.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** At defaults a 120 by 60 inch, 12 gauge steel sheet weighs about 214 pounds and costs about 133 dollars. Thirty-eight parts of 52 square inches use roughly 27 percent of the sheet, which signals a poor nest or a part that is not area-efficient; most flat parts nest between 65 and 85 percent. The tool still flags the cost: raise parts per sheet and watch cost per part drop on the chart. Recovered remnant matters only if you actually shelve and reuse it.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Quoting on net part weight instead of sheet weight hides the scrap cost. Another mistake is applying a flat 15 percent scrap factor to every part, which over-prices efficient nests and under-prices lace patterns. Estimators also forget that sheet price per pound changes by gauge, coating and quantity break.

**Cta:** If your nest reports and purchase prices live in separate systems, Netray can help pull them into your ERP quote flow. Ask for an expert review of your material costing setup.

**Faq:**

#### What is a good nest utilization for sheet metal?

**Answer:** Flat, blocky parts commonly reach 70 to 85 percent. Parts with large cutouts, long brackets or irregular shapes may sit at 50 to 65 percent. Common-line cutting, rotation and mixing different parts on one nest can raise utilization.

#### Should I include kerf in the part area?

**Answer:** Net part area from the flat pattern is fine because the nest report already reflects kerf spacing in how many parts fit. Utilization here is the area of the parts divided by sheet area, so kerf and web spacing appear as lost area.

#### How is scrap credit calculated?

**Answer:** Scrap weight is the sheet weight not used by parts. The recovered share is credited at the sheet price per pound, the remainder at the recycler price per pound. Set recovered share to zero if you do not reuse remnants.

#### Does this work for coil or stainless sheets?

**Answer:** Yes. Pick the alloy density, set sheet dimensions to the blank or coil cut length times width, and enter the price per pound. For coil, use the actual blank size and treat edge trim as part of the scrap.
