**Min:** 0

**Step:** 100

**Unit:** pcs

#### Order multiple or reel quantity

**Key:** multiple

**Type:** number

**Default:** 4000

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 100

**Unit:** pcs

**Step:** 0.005

**Help:** Use the price break that applies to the rounded quantity.

#### Annual usage

**Key:** annual_usage

**Type:** number

**Default:** 12000

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 500

**Unit:** pcs

#### Annual carrying cost

**Key:** carry

**Type:** number

**Default:** 20

**Min:** 0

**Max:** 60

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** %

**Help:** Cost of capital, storage, obsolescence and handling.

**Outputs:**

#### Requirement with overage

**Key:** need

**Expr:** required_qty * (1 + scrap / 100)

**Format:** integer

#### Order quantity

**Key:** order_qty

**Expr:** max(moq, ceil(need / multiple) * multiple)

**Format:** integer

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Rounded up to the order multiple and at least the MOQ.

#### Excess pieces

**Key:** excess

**Expr:** order_qty - need

**Format:** integer

#### Order value

**Key:** order_cost

**Expr:** order_qty * unit_price

**Format:** currency

**Primary:** true

#### Value of excess

**Key:** excess_cost

**Expr:** excess * unit_price

**Format:** currency

#### Months to consume excess

**Key:** months

**Expr:** excess / (annual_usage / 12)

**Format:** months

#### Carrying cost of excess

**Key:** carry_cost

**Expr:** excess_cost * carry / 100 * months / 12

**Format:** currency

**Description:** Approximate cost to hold the excess until used.

**Chart:**

#### Order quantity and excess versus requirement

**Type:** line

**X:** required_qty

**From:** 100

**To:** 12000

**Steps:** 40

**Series:**

- order_qty
- excess

**Disclaimer:** Assumes the excess is eventually consumed at the annual usage rate. If the part is at end of life or has limited shelf life, treat the excess as a write-off risk instead.

## Content

**Intro:** Component prices look low per piece until you are forced to buy a full reel for a small job. This calculator rounds a requirement to the MOQ and order multiple and shows how much excess that creates, what it is worth and what it costs to carry.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the net requirement from MRP, an overage for placement loss and the supplier's minimum order quantity and order multiple. For SMT parts the multiple is usually the reel quantity. Add the unit price at the rounded quantity, annual usage and your carrying cost rate. The order quantity is the larger of the MOQ and the requirement rounded up to a whole multiple. The excess pieces and their value show what you are buying beyond the job. The chart sweeps the requirement to show the sawtooth pattern of excess as you cross reel boundaries.

#### The formulas

**Body:** Requirement with overage equals required quantity times one plus the overage percent. Order quantity equals the maximum of the MOQ and the ceiling of requirement over multiple times the multiple. Excess equals order quantity minus requirement. Months to consume equals excess divided by monthly usage. Carrying cost equals the value of the excess times the annual carry rate times the months held divided by twelve. The carry rate should reflect capital, storage, handling and the risk of obsolescence.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** If the months to consume are a few, the excess is cheap inventory that will be used. If it is measured in years, compare against the savings from the reel price. A cut tape or partial reel price from a distributor can be better for low usage parts even though the unit price is higher. For low-cost passives the excess is negligible, for expensive devices it can dominate. Check the shelf life and moisture limits before holding long.

**Bullets:**

- Compare reel versus cut tape pricing
- Ask the supplier for a mixed reel or a split pack
- Consolidate demand across products to use the excess
- Keep the excess where MRP can see it

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Common errors are using the unit price from the wrong quantity break, leaving the overage at zero for parts that suffer placement loss, and ignoring that the excess may already be sitting in stock from a previous buy. Also remember that tape width and reel size affect feeder setup, so a smaller reel is not always a drop-in.

**Cta:** If your ERP lot sizing rules already apply MOQ and multiples, Netray can help check whether they match what suppliers actually ship, and review the excess they create.

**Faq:**

#### Why does the order quantity jump at certain requirements?

**Answer:** Because you can only buy whole multiples. Once the requirement exceeds one reel, you need two, so the excess resets near zero and grows again. The chart on this page shows that sawtooth.

#### What carrying cost percentage should I use?

**Answer:** Use your finance team's figure if you have one. Many companies use a range of about 15 to 30 percent per year, including capital cost, storage, handling and obsolescence risk.

#### Does this handle price breaks?

**Answer:** Not automatically. Enter the unit price that applies at the rounded order quantity. If the next break is close, change the requirement and compare order value.

#### Should I always avoid excess?

**Answer:** No. Excess on cheap, long-life parts is often the lowest total cost, since it avoids small-order fees and shortage risk. The key is to know the number and make the choice on purpose.
