## Content

**Intro:** Pipe weight drives freight quotes, crane picks, support design and hydrotest loading. This calculator uses the standard cylinder shell formula, so you can enter any OD and wall, not only catalog schedules.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the outside diameter and wall thickness in millimeters, the cut length and the number of pieces. Pick the material density. For hydrotest or operating weight, also set the fluid density. The tool returns kg per meter, total empty weight, the weight of contents per meter and the total filled weight. Use the chart to see how weight climbs as wall thickness increases, which helps when comparing schedules during quoting.

**Bullets:**

- Use actual OD, not nominal pipe size
- Use the ordered wall, not the minimum wall
- Set fluid to zero for gas lines you will not test with water
- Add coating, insulation and fittings separately

#### The formula behind it

**Body:** Metal cross section is pi/4 x (OD squared minus ID squared), which simplifies to pi x t x (OD minus t). Multiply by density and length. With dimensions in mm and density in kg per m3, divide by one million. For carbon steel this reduces to the familiar 0.02466 x t x (OD minus t) kg per meter. The contents weight uses the inside diameter in the same way, with the fluid density.

#### Worked example

**Body:** NPS 6 schedule 40 pipe, OD 168.3 mm, wall 7.11 mm, carbon steel. Weight per meter is pi x 7.11 x 161.19 x 7850 divided by 1,000,000, about 28.3 kg per meter. A 12 m length weighs about 340 kg empty. Filled with water, add roughly 18.9 kg per meter for the 154.08 mm bore, giving about 567 kg per length. That filled number is what the rigging plan and pipe supports must carry during hydrotest.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** The most common errors are using nominal size as OD, mixing inches and millimeters, and forgetting that mill weight is billed on actual weight while quotes use nominal. In an ERP, store theoretical weight per meter on the item master and let the system multiply by length for freight and costing, then compare to scale weights at receipt.

**Bullets:**

- Seamless pipe wall tolerance can reach minus 12.5 percent
- Weld seams, lining and cladding change the real weight
- Stainless uses a different density than carbon steel

**Cta:** If your item master carries theoretical weights that do not match what ships, Netray can help query the ERP and flag the mismatches. This calculator works fine without us.

**Faq:**

#### What is the formula for steel pipe weight per meter?

**Answer:** Weight per meter equals pi x wall x (OD minus wall) x density, with dimensions in mm and density in kg per m3 divided by one million. For carbon steel this equals 0.02466 x wall x (OD minus wall) kg per meter.

#### Does this include the weight of water?

**Answer:** Yes. The tool shows fluid weight per meter from the inside diameter and the fill density you set, and a total filled weight. Set the fluid density to zero if you only need empty weight.

#### Why is mill weight different from the calculated weight?

**Answer:** Real pipe has wall tolerance, weld seams and coatings. Seamless pipe can be up to 12.5 percent under nominal wall by specification, so scale weights usually land a few percent from theoretical.

#### Can I use it for tubing and stainless pipe?

**Answer:** Yes. Enter the actual OD and wall and choose the matching density. Stainless steels are slightly denser than carbon steel, so use 8000 kg per m3 for 304 and 316 unless your mill certificate states otherwise.
