## Content

**Intro:** A cut list with weights is the starting point for a steel order, a freight quote and a lifting plan. This worksheet keeps the arithmetic out of your head: enter size and density once per row and the weights follow.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the cut list

**Body:** Enter one row per part mark. Give quantity, length, width and thickness in millimetres, and the density of the alloy in kg per cubic metre. The sheet returns the weight of one piece and the weight of the whole line. Totals and the average piece weight are shown below the table. Use the export button to move the result into Excel for your purchase request or into PDF for a quote file.

**Bullets:**

- Keep all dimensions in millimetres
- Use one row per mark and material
- Change the density for each alloy
- Add rows for offcuts you plan to keep

#### The formula behind the weights

**Body:** Weight equals volume times density. With dimensions in millimetres, volume in cubic millimetres divided by one billion gives cubic metres, and multiplying by density in kg per cubic metre gives kilograms. A 600 x 400 x 20 mm plate in steel at 7850 kg/m3 is 4.8 million cubic mm, or 0.0048 cubic metres, which weighs 37.7 kg. The same logic works for any flat part, so you can use it for aluminum, stainless or copper alloys by changing the density.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** The most frequent error is mixing units, for example entering thickness in inches against millimetre lengths. The second is using one density for every row on a mixed order. Theoretical weight also differs from mill weight, because plate is rolled to a thickness tolerance and often runs slightly over nominal. When you load parts into an ERP, the net weight field on the item master usually expects the finished part weight, while the purchase weight is the raw plate weight, so keep both columns in your records.

**Bullets:**

- Do not forget kerf and trim when ordering whole plates
- Check whether freight is quoted on theoretical or scale weight
- Record the density source on the drawing or spec

**Cta:** If your item master weights drift from what you actually buy, we can build an agent that compares ERP net weights to calculated stock weights and flags gaps.

**Faq:**

#### What density should I use for carbon steel?

**Answer:** Use 7850 kg/m3 for carbon and low alloy structural steel. It is the common handbook value and matches most mill weight tables. Stainless steels are slightly higher, about 7900 to 8000, depending on grade and the reference you follow.

#### Is the result the same as the weight on the mill invoice?

**Answer:** Not exactly. The sheet gives theoretical weight from nominal size. Mills invoice on scale weight, which is usually a little higher because plate is rolled within a thickness tolerance. Expect a small difference and agree the basis with your supplier.

#### Can I use inches?

**Answer:** Convert to millimetres first, multiplying inches by 25.4. The formula and the density unit assume millimetres and kg per cubic metre. Mixing units in the same row gives wrong weights without any warning.

#### Does it account for holes and cutouts?

**Answer:** No. It treats each part as a full rectangle. For parts with large cutouts, reduce the dimensions to an equivalent size or subtract the cutout volume by adding a separate negative-quantity row for your own records.
