**Notes:** Thickness values are the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge for uncoated carbon steel sheet. Galvanized, aluminium, stainless and wire gauges use different thickness tables, so the same gauge number does not mean the same thickness. Weight uses 40.8 lb per square foot per inch of thickness and a density of 7.85 g/cm3. Always state thickness in inches or mm on drawings and purchase orders.

## Content

**Intro:** Gauge numbers get smaller as sheet gets thicker, and each material has its own table. This chart lists the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge for carbon steel sheet in inches and millimetres with weight per area so estimators and buyers can convert quickly.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the chart

**Body:** Search for the gauge on the drawing or the quote, then read the thickness in the unit you need. Use the weight columns to estimate sheet cost, freight and press tonnage. For a part blank, multiply the area by the weight per unit area to get weight, then by the price per kilogram or pound. Export to Excel for a quote template. If the thickness matters to function, specify it directly with a tolerance instead of relying on the gauge number.

#### Why gauge is ambiguous

**Body:** Gauge systems are historical and differ by material. Carbon steel sheet follows the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge, galvanized sheet has its own slightly thicker values, and aluminium and brass use other tables. Stainless sheet is usually close to the carbon steel values but is not identical in every source. A 14 gauge aluminium part is therefore a different thickness from a 14 gauge steel part. Mills also roll to commercial tolerances, so actual thickness varies around nominal.

**Bullets:**

- 14 gauge carbon steel is about 1.90 mm
- 16 gauge carbon steel is about 1.52 mm
- Thicker gauge number means thinner sheet
- Specify thickness and tolerance in mm or inch

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** The usual errors are reading a steel gauge table for aluminium or galvanized sheet, quoting by gauge without the material, and ignoring the coating thickness on galvanized or painted stock. Another is using a nominal weight for freight without allowing for tolerance and the packaging weight. In the ERP, store thickness as a numeric attribute and keep gauge as a description only, so planning and costing do not depend on a lookup.

**Cta:** If sheet items in your ERP are described by gauge text only, we can help extract thickness, material and size into clean attributes for costing and planning.

**Faq:**

#### What is 14 gauge steel in mm?

**Answer:** 14 gauge carbon steel sheet is 0.0747 inch, which is about 1.90 mm. It weighs roughly 3.05 pounds per square foot or 14.9 kg per square metre, using a steel density of 7.85 g/cm3.

#### Is 16 gauge the same for steel and aluminium?

**Answer:** No. Gauge tables differ by material. 16 gauge carbon steel is 0.0598 inch, while 16 gauge aluminium is 0.0508 inch on the Brown and Sharpe style table. Always state the material when quoting by gauge.

#### How is weight per square foot calculated?

**Answer:** Carbon steel plate weighs about 40.8 pounds per square foot per inch of thickness. Multiply that by the thickness in inches. In metric, multiply thickness in mm by 7.85 to get kg per square metre.

#### Should I order by gauge or thickness?

**Answer:** Order by thickness with a tolerance where function depends on it. Gauge is acceptable for non-critical sheet within a known material, but it invites confusion between gauge systems and coated or uncoated stock.
