**Disclaimer:** The index formula covers material only. Labor, energy and freight changes may also be legitimate; ask the supplier for a cost breakdown and test each element.

## Content

**Intro:** A supplier asks for nine percent. Is that fair? This calculator sizes the cost of the request and compares it with the increase justified by the material index, so you enter the conversation with a number.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter your annual quantity and current unit price, the increase requested, the share of the price that is the indexed raw material and the change in the published index since the last price was set. The calculator returns the cost of the request, the justified increase, the gap and a counter price. The chart shows the annual cost across a range of requested percentages.

#### The formula behind it

**Body:** The justified increase equals material share times index change. If material is 45 percent of the price and the index rose 6 percent, the price should rise about 2.7 percent, not 6 and not 9. The annual cost is quantity times current price times the percent. This is the standard approach in index-linked contracts for metals, resins and similar commodities.

**Bullets:**

- Justified % = material share x index change
- Annual cost = quantity x price x percent
- Gap = requested cost - justified cost

#### Reading the gap

**Body:** The gap is the annual value in dispute. If it is small, accept and move on. If it is large, ask for the cost breakdown behind the other elements. Remember that an index can fall as well as rise: build a symmetrical formula into the contract so you receive reductions too.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Using the headline index instead of the one that matches the supplier's grade and region, applying the index change to the whole price, ignoring the lag between index and purchase date and forgetting that the supplier may have bought material earlier at a different price. Agree the index, the base date and the lag in writing.

**Cta:** Netray can calculate the exposure across all open and forecast purchases from your ERP, so you see the full impact of each request.

**Faq:**

#### What is a material index clause?

**Answer:** A contract term that adjusts the price by a formula tied to a published index, usually for a stated material share, with a base date, a review interval and often a collar so small moves do not trigger changes.

#### Should material share be based on weight or cost?

**Answer:** Use the share of the price that is the raw material, ideally taken from a supplier cost breakdown. Part weight times material price per kilogram gives a good starting estimate.

#### What if the supplier's cost rose for other reasons?

**Answer:** Ask for evidence per element: labor, energy, freight, overhead. Accept what is documented and reasonable, and consider offsetting with volume, term or process improvements.

#### Does this work for services?

**Answer:** Partly. Replace the material index with a labor or wage index and the material share with the labor share of the price.
