## Content

**Intro:** This calculator counts the SQL Server core licences a SyteLine 9 or 10 on-prem landscape needs when each database VM is licensed per core, then applies your quoted pack price and Software Assurance rate over a period. It answers how much SQL Server will cost for your SyteLine sizing without assuming any list price.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the number of production SQL Server VMs and their vCPUs, then any non-production VMs that need paid licences. Enter the price per 2-core pack from your quote for the edition you are buying, and the annual Software Assurance percentage. The outputs show licensed cores, packs, up-front licence cost, SA per year and the total over your chosen years. The chart sweeps vCPUs per production VM from 4 to 32, which is the conversation you have with your infrastructure team: every extra pair of vCPUs is another pack, so right-size the VM from measured CPU use before you buy.

**Bullets:**

- Use your reseller quote for the pack price
- Size vCPUs from real CPU history, not from the old physical box
- Re-run with Standard and Enterprise quotes to compare

#### The per-core rules the formula applies

**Body:** Under per-core licensing of individual virtual machines, you license every virtual core assigned to the VM, with a minimum of four core licences per VM, and core licences are sold in 2-core packs. So a 2 vCPU VM still needs 4 core licences, and an 8 vCPU VM needs 8, which is 4 packs. The calculator applies max(4, vCPUs) per VM, sums production and non-production, and rounds up to whole packs. Two points to check against Microsoft's guide for your version: newer versions tie per-VM licensing to active Software Assurance or subscription licences, and licensing all physical cores of a host with Enterprise and SA is a different model that allows unlimited VMs on that host.

**Bullets:**

#### What SyteLine puts on SQL Server

**Body:** SyteLine 10 on-prem runs its application, forms, objects and templates data in an all-in-one database, alongside any additional site databases in a multi-site setup. Reports run through SQL Server Reporting Services. If SSRS is installed on its own server, that server's operating system environment generally needs its own SQL Server licence, so add it as a production VM in the calculator when that is your design. Standard edition has hardware and feature limits that differ by version; compare them with your measured memory and core needs instead of assuming Standard is enough. A separate reporting replica for BI or AI workloads is another licensed production instance.

**Bullets:**

#### Worked example

**Body:** A site runs one production database VM with 8 vCPUs, a separate SSRS VM with 2 vCPUs, and dev and test on Developer edition. Enter production VMs 1 at 8 vCPUs. Because the second line simply applies the same per-VM rule, use it for the SSRS server: 1 VM at 2 vCPUs, which the 4-core minimum lifts to 4. That gives 8 + 4 = 12 cores, 6 packs. With a pack price P and 25 percent SA, licence cost is 6P, SA is 1.5P per year, and five years total 13.5P. Cutting the main VM to 6 vCPUs saves one pack and one quarter of a pack per year in SA.

**Bullets:**

**Cta:** If you are adding a private AI layer next to SyteLine, we can help size it so it reads from a replica you already license rather than adding new SQL Server cores.

**Faq:**

#### How much does SQL Server cost for SyteLine?

**Answer:** It depends on edition, cores and your agreement. Under per-core licensing the cost is the number of 2-core packs times the pack price, plus Software Assurance if you buy it. A single 8 vCPU production VM needs 4 packs. Enter your quoted price here for a multi-year total.

#### Is there a minimum number of core licences per VM?

**Answer:** Yes. When licensing individual virtual machines per core, each VM needs at least four core licences even if it has fewer vCPUs. That is why the calculator uses the larger of 4 and the vCPU count for every VM.

#### Do dev and test SyteLine databases need paid SQL Server licences?

**Answer:** Developer edition is free for development and testing that is not production use. Environments used for production workloads, such as a reporting copy that users rely on, need licensing. Check how your agreement treats test environments before entering zero.

#### Should I choose SQL Server Standard or Enterprise for SyteLine?

**Answer:** Many single-site installations run on Standard, but check its memory and core limits for your version against your measured workload, and whether you need Enterprise features such as readable secondaries for a reporting replica. Price both editions here with real quotes.
