## Tool

**Kind:** calculator

**Inputs:**

#### Sample weight before drying

**Key:** wet_wt

**Default:** 124

**Min:** 0.1

**Step:** 0.1

**Unit:** g

**Help:** Weigh a small cross-cut sample from the board straight after cutting.

#### Oven-dry sample weight

**Key:** dry_wt

**Type:** number

**Default:** 100

**Min:** 0.1

**Step:** 0.1

**Unit:** g

**Help:** Constant weight after drying at about 103 C.

#### Board width at current MC

**Key:** width

**Type:** number

**Default:** 300

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** mm

#### Target moisture content

**Key:** tgt_mc

**Type:** number

**Default:** 10

**Min:** 4

**Max:** 30

**Step:** 0.5

**Unit:** %

**Help:** Equilibrium MC of the final use environment.

#### Tangential shrinkage, green to oven-dry

**Key:** shrink_t

**Type:** number

**Default:** 8

**Min:** 1

**Max:** 20

**Step:** 0.1

**Unit:** %

**Help:** Species value; many hardwoods fall between about 6 and 12 percent.

**Outputs:**

#### Current moisture content

**Key:** mc

**Expr:** (wet_wt - dry_wt) / dry_wt * 100

**Format:** decimal

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Water weight divided by oven-dry weight, in percent.

#### MC below fiber saturation

**Key:** mc_eff

**Expr:** min(mc, 30)

**Format:** decimal

**Description:** Wood changes size only below the fiber saturation point, taken as 30 percent.

#### Target MC below fiber saturation

**Key:** tgt_eff

**Expr:** min(tgt_mc, 30)

**Format:** decimal

#### Dimensional change

**Key:** change_pct

**Expr:** shrink_t * (mc_eff - tgt_eff) / 30

**Format:** decimal

**Description:** Percent shrinkage. A negative number means the board will swell.

#### Width change

**Key:** change_mm

**Expr:** width * change_pct / 100

**Format:** decimal

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Millimeters of shrinkage; negative means swelling.

#### Expected final width

**Key:** final_w

**Expr:** width - change_mm

**Format:** decimal

**Chart:**

#### Final width vs target MC

**Type:** line

**X:** tgt_mc

**From:** 4

**To:** 20

**Steps:** 17

**Series:**

- final_w

**Disclaimer:** Linear approximation. Real wood varies by species, grain angle, ring orientation and drying stress. Use species data and test your own boards.

## Content

**Intro:** Furniture joints, tabletops and panels crack or gap when wood is machined at the wrong moisture content. This calculator gives you MC from a simple oven-dry test, then estimates how far a board will shrink or swell before it reaches the moisture of its final environment.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Cut a small sample at least 300 mm away from the board end, weigh it, dry it in an oven at about 103 C until the weight stops changing, and weigh it again. Enter both weights, then the board width, your target MC and the tangential shrinkage value for the species. The result shows moisture now and the expected width at target.

**Bullets:**

- Sample away from the ends, where wood dries faster
- Use tangential value for flat-sawn boards, radial for quarter-sawn
- Set target MC from the humidity where the furniture will live

#### The method

**Body:** Moisture content by the oven-dry method is (wet weight - dry weight) / dry weight x 100. Above the fiber saturation point, around 30 percent MC, wood does not change size. Below it, shrinkage is roughly linear: change = total shrinkage x (MC start - MC end) / 30. The tool applies that rule and caps MC at 30 so green boards are handled sensibly.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** A 300 mm flat-sawn board drying from 24 to 10 percent MC shrinks about 11 mm at 8 percent tangential shrinkage. That is why glue-up widths, panel float in frames and drawer clearances are set for the final MC. If the answer is negative the board will swell, which matters for stock stored in a damp warehouse before machining.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Common errors are using the moisture meter reading without checking species correction, testing only one board in a stack, and assuming radial and tangential shrink equally. Stock also dries unevenly, creating moisture gradients that cause cupping after machining. Condition stock in the workshop before final machining, and re-test when seasons change.

**Cta:** If kiln charges, lot moisture tests and furniture BOMs sit in your ERP, we can build a read-only assistant that flags lots outside the MC window before they are released to machining.

**Faq:**

#### What moisture content should furniture wood be?

**Answer:** It should match the equilibrium moisture of the use environment. Many indoor furniture parts target roughly 8 to 12 percent depending on climate and heating. Check your market and buyer specification, since tropical and dry-climate targets differ.

#### Why is 30 percent used in the formula?

**Answer:** Thirty percent is the typical fiber saturation point, where cell walls hold maximum bound water. Real species range from about 25 to 35 percent. The tool uses 30 as a common planning figure.

#### Is the oven-dry method accurate?

**Answer:** It is the reference method for MC, provided samples are representative and dried to constant weight. Resin-rich woods can lose volatiles and read slightly high. Moisture meters are quicker but should be checked against oven tests.

#### Does shrinkage differ along the grain?

**Answer:** Along the grain shrinkage is very small, usually well under one percent, so this calculator is meant for width and thickness. Tangential shrinkage is often about twice radial, so grain orientation matters.
