## Content

**Intro:** Quoting or scheduling a turned part starts with how long the tool is actually in the cut. This calculator converts diameter, length, speed, feed and depth of cut into spindle speed, passes, cutting time and metal removal rate.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the diameter being turned, the length of cut and the cutting speed and feed recommended by your insert supplier for the material. Add the radial stock to remove and the depth you want per pass. The calculator caps the spindle at your maximum rpm, which matters on small diameters where the formula suggests more rpm than the machine or chuck allows. Read cutting time and removal rate as the two comparison numbers when you test different feed and depth combinations.

**Bullets:**

- Use radial stock, not diametral, for passes
- Set the rpm limit from the chuck or machine
- Try several feeds with the chart

#### The formulas

**Body:** Spindle speed equals 1000 times cutting speed divided by pi times diameter. Feed rate is rpm times feed per revolution. Time for one pass equals the length of cut plus approach divided by the feed rate. Passes equal the radial stock divided by depth of cut, rounded up. Metal removal rate in cm3 per minute equals cutting speed in m/min times feed in mm/rev times depth of cut in mm.

#### Reading the results

**Body:** Total cutting time is the figure to compare against standard times in a routing, but remember it only covers cutting. Tool change, loading, probing, rapid moves and inspection come on top. Removal rate helps to judge whether a longer cycle is due to conservative parameters or to genuine volume. Doubling feed roughly halves cutting time, but it also increases cutting force and affects surface finish and insert life, so use the chart as a guide rather than a recommendation.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Users often enter diametral stock in the radial stock field, which doubles the pass count, or use an inch feed with mm length. Another common mistake is applying the full cutting speed on very small diameters, which can exceed the machine speed limit and give a cutting time that cannot be achieved.

**Bullets:**

- Check radial versus diametral values
- Keep units in mm and m/min
- Include a finishing pass if the drawing needs it

**Cta:** If you compare quoted or routing times with actual machine times in your ERP or MES, we can help build that comparison from your data.

**Faq:**

#### What is the turning time formula?

**Answer:** Cutting time per pass equals length of cut divided by feed per revolution times spindle speed. Spindle speed is 1000 times cutting speed divided by pi times diameter. Multiply by the number of passes for total time.

#### Does this include tool change and loading time?

**Answer:** No. It estimates only the time the tool is cutting. Add loading, unloading, tool changes, rapid moves, measurement and any dwell to get a cycle time.

#### Why is my spindle speed capped?

**Answer:** The formula gives very high rpm for small diameters. The calculator limits it to the maximum you enter, because machine, chuck or bar feeder limits apply. The actual cutting speed is then lower than your target.

#### How many passes do I need?

**Answer:** Divide the radial stock by the depth of cut and round up. Roughing may use larger depths and finishing a small final cut, so run the calculation for each stage and add the times together.
