## Audience

- Compliance engineer
- Product engineer
- Quality manager

## Tool

**Kind:** checklist

**Groups:**

#### Scope and standard

**Items:**

**Text:** Identify the product category and the applicable safety standard, for example UL 62368-1 for audio, video and ICT equipment

**Critical:** true

**Text:** Decide between a Listing for a finished product and Recognition for a component

**Critical:** true

Confirm the target markets and whether a CB report or other national deviations are needed

Choose an NRTL, such as UL Solutions, and request a project quote

Record ratings: voltage, frequency, current, environment and duty cycle

#### Design and components

**Items:**

**Text:** Use components that are already certified or recognised for the intended use

**Critical:** true

Prepare the critical components list with manufacturer, model and rating

**Text:** Check spacing, creepage and clearance against the standard

**Critical:** true

Verify the plastics are recognised with flame class, thickness and temperature rating

Confirm PCB material flammability rating and manufacturer

Review protective earth, fuse and thermal protection design

#### Documents for submission

**Items:**

**Text:** Prepare schematics, PCB layout and the bill of materials

**Critical:** true

Prepare the user manual with installation and safety instructions

Provide a product description and block diagram

**Text:** Prepare the marking and label drawing with rating plate content

**Critical:** true

Supply component datasheets and certificates

Include factory location and manufacturing process outline

#### Samples and testing

**Items:**

**Text:** Provide the number of samples requested by the lab, including a spare

**Critical:** true

Include any special samples such as components with open circuits or modified protection

Run pre-compliance checks on temperature rise and dielectric strength

Confirm test accessories, cables and loads are supplied

Plan time for design changes found during evaluation

#### Factory and follow-up

**Items:**

**Text:** Prepare the factory for an initial production inspection

**Critical:** true

Set up production line tests such as hipot and ground continuity as the standard requires

**Text:** Control the approved BOM so unauthorised component changes are blocked

**Critical:** true

Make sure labels carry the correct file number and mark once authorised

Plan for periodic follow-up inspections and notify the lab of changes

Keep records tied to lot and serial for traceability

**Scoring Note:** Critical items are the common causes of delay. Requirements differ by standard and certifier, so use your NRTL's project handbook as the final authority.

## Content

**Intro:** Getting a product UL listed is mostly preparation. The lab evaluates a design against a published standard, then follows up on the factory. This checklist covers the items that most often slow a first submission.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the checklist

**Body:** Go through the groups in order and mark each item done or not applicable. Treat critical items as gates: do not submit until they are settled. Assign an owner per group, such as design engineering for components and quality for the factory. Export the list to PDF and share it with your certification contact so both sides see the same gaps.

#### Listing, recognition and the NRTL

**Body:** In the United States, products used in the workplace are expected to be certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. UL Solutions is one NRTL, and others such as Intertek and CSA Group offer similar marks. A Listing covers a complete product evaluated for end use. Recognition covers a component intended to be used inside another product, and carries conditions of acceptability. Certification also covers ongoing factory follow-up, not just a one-time test.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Teams often pick uncertified power supplies or plastics, then discover late that the whole assembly needs extra testing. Others change a critical component after approval without telling the lab. Label errors and missing manuals also cause avoidable rounds of questions.

**Bullets:**

- Starting layout before choosing the standard
- Treating a component's own mark as proof of end-use acceptance
- Changing suppliers without a change notice
- Underestimating lab queue time

**Cta:** If your approved component lists and change records live in an ERP and PLM, we can help keep them linked and searchable on your own servers.

**Faq:**

#### What is the difference between UL Listed and UL Recognized?

**Answer:** Listed applies to a complete product evaluated for its end use. Recognized applies to a component or material meant to be installed in a larger product, with conditions of acceptability that the end product evaluation must respect.

#### Is UL certification required by law?

**Answer:** There is no single federal law requiring UL itself. Many local codes, employers and buyers require certification by an NRTL, and the OSHA program recognises such laboratories. Check the requirements for your market and customer.

#### How long does listing take?

**Answer:** It depends on the standard, the lab queue and how ready the design is. Simple products can take weeks and complex ones several months. Pre-compliance testing and complete documents shorten the schedule the most.

#### Do I need factory inspections?

**Answer:** Yes for most Listing programs. After approval, the lab follows up with periodic factory inspections to confirm that production still matches the evaluated design and that required production tests are run.
