#### Estimated runtime vs load

**Type:** line

**X:** load_w

**From:** 500

**To:** 8000

**Steps:** 30

**Series:**

**Disclaimer:** Planning estimate only. Real runtime depends on battery age, temperature, load curve and the UPS discharge profile, and is usually not linear. Use the manufacturer's runtime chart for the final selection and replace batteries on the vendor's schedule.

## Content

**Intro:** A plant server room often outlives its UPS design: loads grow, batteries age and nobody checks the runtime. This calculator gives a quick, transparent estimate of the VA rating you need and the runtime you can expect from a given battery.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the measured power draw of the equipment in watts, ideally from rack PDU readings rather than nameplate values, which are much higher than real draw. Add growth headroom, the battery energy of the installed string, the depth of discharge you allow and the inverter efficiency. The tool returns the VA rating to buy, the runtime you have now and the battery energy needed to meet the runtime target.

**Bullets:**

- Measure load with metered PDUs where you can
- Include network switches, firewalls and storage, not only servers
- Decide the target from the time needed for a clean ERP and database shutdown
- Check both VA and watt ratings of the UPS

#### The formulas

**Body:** Required VA equals planned watts divided by the load power factor. Runtime in minutes equals usable battery watt-hours, multiplied by depth of discharge and inverter efficiency, divided by load watts, times 60. Battery energy needed for a target runtime reverses that: watts times hours, divided by depth of discharge and efficiency. These are first order estimates, because batteries deliver less energy at high discharge rates and lose capacity as they age.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** If the runtime at planned load is shorter than the time your systems need to shut down, you have a gap, shown as the battery shortfall. Many plants choose a UPS plus a generator, so the UPS only has to bridge the generator start time. Where a plant has no generator, runtime should cover an orderly shutdown of ERP, databases, and storage, and the UPS should signal servers to do so.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Buying from nameplate wattage, ignoring that battery capacity falls with age, and never testing the UPS under load are the usual faults. Another is running a UPS at near full load, which leaves no margin and shortens runtime. Test the shutdown sequence and replace batteries at the interval the manufacturer recommends, commonly every three to five years for sealed lead acid.

**Cta:** If your ERP must stay available through power events, Netray can help review the application and database shutdown and recovery sequence as part of a resilience plan.

**Faq:**

#### How do I convert watts to VA?

**Answer:** Divide real power in watts by the power factor. At a power factor of 0.9, 3,000 W needs about 3,333 VA. Always check that the UPS watt rating is also above your load, because many UPS models have a watt rating below the VA figure.

#### How much runtime does a server room UPS need?

**Answer:** Enough to bridge to a generator or to shut down systems cleanly. For ERP and database servers that is often 10 to 30 minutes, but the right figure comes from your measured shutdown time plus margin.

#### Why is real runtime shorter than the calculation?

**Answer:** Batteries deliver less usable energy at high discharge rates, lose capacity with age and in cold, and inverters have losses. Use the vendor's runtime chart for the final decision and test it.

#### Should I size the UPS at 100 percent of the load?

**Answer:** No. Leave headroom for growth and keep typical load well below the rating, often in the 50 to 80 percent range, for better efficiency, redundancy options and longer runtime.
