## Content

**Intro:** A truck crossing from Texas or another border state into Mexico carries a pile of paperwork, and the bill of lading is the document that ties shipper, carrier, consignee and brokers together. This template gives you a clean format that your carrier and brokers can recognize.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the template

**Body:** Fill in the shipper, consignee, carrier, port of crossing and cargo description, and add the brokers on both sides. Export to PDF for the driver and to Word if you want to adjust the layout. Print one copy for the driver, send one to each broker and keep one with the shipping record. Match the description with the commercial invoice to avoid customs delays.

**Bullets:**

- Use the same description as the commercial invoice
- Include the purchase order reference for the receiving dock
- Name both brokers so the carrier can coordinate the transfer
- Mark hazardous materials where they apply and attach the required documents

#### How the documents fit together

**Body:** On a typical transborder movement, the US exporter provides the invoice and packing list, the US side files export information as required, the Mexican broker prepares the pedimento, and the Mexican carrier issues the carta porte, which is a CFDI complement describing the transport. The bill of lading is the transport contract and receipt. Many shipments also use a transfer at the border between a US and a Mexican carrier.

#### Reading incoterms in practice

**Body:** The Incoterm determines who arranges and pays for customs clearance and transport. Under DAP the seller delivers to the named place without import clearance, so the Mexican importer handles duties. Under DDP the seller takes on import formalities, which is complicated in Mexico for a foreign seller. Many manufacturers use FCA or DAP with a clear broker assignment.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Descriptions that are too vague for customs, missing weight and piece count that do not match the packing list, and not naming the correct consignee entity. Another is leaving the importer of record unclear in an IMMEX or shelter structure, which can delay the pedimento and create demurrage at the border.

**Cta:** If your ERP holds shipments and packing data, Netray can generate shipping documents and broker pre-alerts from the delivery record.

**Faq:**

#### Is a bill of lading the same as a carta porte?

**Answer:** No. A bill of lading is the contract of carriage and receipt for goods. The carta porte is a Mexican tax document, a complement to the CFDI, that describes the transport for SAT purposes. Both may be needed for a Mexican movement.

#### Do I need a Mexican broker if I have a US broker?

**Answer:** Yes. Imports into Mexico are filed by a licensed Mexican customs broker with the pedimento. The US broker handles the US export side. Name both on the bill of lading so the carrier knows who to contact.

#### What if the shipment is hazardous?

**Answer:** Hazardous materials need additional marking, shipping papers and driver requirements on both sides of the border. Use the carrier's hazmat format and attach the safety data sheet. This template only marks the line for attention.

#### Can I change the layout?

**Answer:** Yes, export to Word and edit. Check with your carrier that any custom layout includes the fields they require for liability and claims.
