#### Actual material issued

**Key:** actual_issued

**Type:** number

**Default:** 1310

**Min:** 0

**Step:** 5

**Unit:** material units

**Outputs:**

#### Net requirement

**Key:** net_req

**Expr:** order_qty * qty_per

**Format:** decimal

**Description:** Material needed with no scrap.

#### Planned issue with scrap

**Key:** planned

**Expr:** order_qty * qty_per * (1 + scrap_pct / 100)

**Format:** decimal

#### Usage variance (quantity)

**Key:** usage_var

**Expr:** actual_issued - planned

**Format:** decimal

**Description:** Positive means more material used than planned.

#### Material usage variance (cost)

**Key:** cost_var

**Expr:** usage_var * std_cost

**Format:** currency

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Positive is unfavorable.

#### Variance vs planned

**Key:** var_pct

**Expr:** if(gt(planned, 0), usage_var / planned * 100, 0)

**Format:** percent

#### Material yield

**Key:** yield_pct

**Expr:** if(gt(actual_issued, 0), net_req / actual_issued * 100, 0)

**Format:** percent

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Net requirement divided by what was actually issued.

#### Actual scrap rate

**Key:** actual_scrap

**Expr:** if(gt(actual_issued, 0), (actual_issued - net_req) / actual_issued * 100, 0)

**Format:** percent

**Chart:**

#### Cost variance vs actual material issued

**Type:** line

**X:** actual_issued

**From:** 1000

**To:** 1600

**Steps:** 25

**Series:**

- cost_var

**Disclaimer:** Simplified single material view. Real work orders may have multiple materials, operations, co products and a different costing method in your ERP. Verify against your own costing setup.

## Content

**Intro:** Material usage variance tells you whether a job consumed more or less material than the standard allowed. This calculator takes the work order quantity, quantity per, scrap allowance and the actual issue and returns the variance, its cost and the yield.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the quantity on the work order, the material quantity per unit from the requirement, and the scrap percent planned in. Add the standard cost of the material and the actual quantity issued to the job. The primary results are the cost variance and the yield. The chart shows how the variance moves as actual issue changes, helping you see how sensitive the job is to overuse.

**Bullets:**

- Use quantity per before scrap
- Enter scrap as a percent
- Read a positive variance as unfavorable

#### The formulas

**Body:** Net requirement is order quantity times quantity per. Planned issue is the net requirement times one plus the scrap percent over one hundred. Usage variance is actual issue minus planned issue, and the cost variance multiplies that by standard cost. Yield is the net requirement divided by actual issue. Scrap rate is the part of the actual issue not contained in the net requirement.

#### Reading the result and common mistakes

**Body:** A small positive variance is normal and should be reviewed for trend, not for a single order. Repeated overruns on one part point to a wrong quantity per, a scrap allowance that is too low, or a process problem. A negative variance can mean under issue, unreported scrap or a quantity per that is set too high. Do not mix unit of measure between the requirement and the issue.

**Bullets:**

- Check unit of measure matches
- Look at trends over many orders
- Review quantity per and scrap allowance, not only the operator
- Remember returns to stock reduce net issue

**Cta:** If you want these variances across all work orders without building reports, we can set up a read only question layer over your ERP data.

**Faq:**

#### What is material usage variance?

**Answer:** It is the difference between the quantity of material actually used and the quantity the standard allowed for the output achieved, valued at standard cost. A positive value means more material was used than allowed, which is unfavorable.

#### How is it different from price variance?

**Answer:** Usage variance measures quantity, valued at standard cost. Purchase price variance measures the difference between the price paid and the standard price. Keeping them separate shows whether the cause is the shop floor or purchasing.

#### Should scrap be in the quantity per or a separate percent?

**Answer:** Either works if applied consistently. Keeping scrap separate makes the allowance visible and easier to review. Folding it into quantity per hides it, which can mask a true process problem.

#### Does this match how my ERP calculates variance?

**Answer:** It matches the basic logic, but ERPs differ in costing method, rollup and how they treat partial completions and rework. Use it for quick checks and reconcile with your system for formal reporting.
