## Content

**Intro:** Whether you run your own warehouse or price storage as a 3PL, the key number is what it costs to hold one pallet for a month. This calculator spreads your monthly cost over all positions and over the ones actually occupied, and shows how utilization drives the result.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter your monthly facility, labor, utilities, equipment and other overhead cost, then the number of usable pallet positions and your average utilization. The tool returns the cost per position, the cost per occupied pallet and a price at your target margin. Move the utilization slider to see the chart and how sensitive the cost is.

#### The formula

**Body:** Total monthly cost equals the sum of the cost lines. Cost per position is total cost divided by total positions. Cost per occupied pallet is total cost divided by the positions in use, which equals positions times utilization. The price at margin multiplies that cost by one plus the margin percent. Because most warehouse costs are fixed in the short term, the cost per occupied pallet rises quickly as utilization falls.

**Bullets:**

- Cost per position = total cost / positions
- Occupied = positions x utilization
- Cost per occupied pallet = total cost / occupied

#### Reading the chart

**Body:** The line shows cost per occupied pallet from 30 to 100 percent utilization. The curve is steep at low utilization and flattens near full. At 100 percent, no capacity is left for seasonal peaks, so most operators plan for a target below that. Use the chart to see how much you gain from filling positions, for example by consolidating customers or slotting slow movers higher.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Typical errors are leaving out indirect labor and equipment, using peak utilization instead of the annual average, and counting unusable positions such as aisles, damaged racking or reserved overflow. Also remember to price handling separately: storage cost alone will not recover receiving and shipping labor.

**Cta:** If your cost and occupancy data live in ERP and WMS reports, we can help bring them together into a live cost-per-position view.

**Faq:**

#### What is a pallet position?

**Answer:** A pallet position is one space where a pallet can be stored, such as a rack slot or a defined floor location. Total positions are the usable ones, not the aisle space or locations that cannot be used.

#### What utilization should a warehouse target?

**Answer:** Many operators plan for roughly 80 to 90 percent average utilization, leaving room for peaks and put-away flexibility. Higher can slow operations, while lower raises the cost per pallet. The right level depends on your business.

#### Does this include handling charges?

**Answer:** No. This is storage cost only. Handling in and out, pick and pack, and other services are normally priced separately, often per pallet, per case or per order line.

#### Why does cost per occupied pallet differ from cost per position?

**Answer:** Because empty positions still cost money. The occupied figure puts the whole cost on the pallets actually stored, so it is always higher than cost per position unless utilization is 100 percent.
