## Content

**Intro:** Most warehouse managers know their total cost but not what a single pallet costs to store or move. This calculator spreads your monthly costs over available positions, occupied positions and pallets handled so you can price work, compare with a 3PL or defend your budget.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Gather one representative month of cost: rent or property cost, loaded labor, utilities, equipment and maintenance, and the rest of the overhead. Then enter your rack capacity in pallet positions, the average share that is occupied and the number of pallets received plus shipped. Use averages over a quarter if volume swings, because a single peak month hides the empty-space cost that matters most.

**Bullets:**

- Include supervision and indirect labor, not only pickers
- Use depreciation for owned buildings and racking
- Count a pallet in and a pallet out as two handlings
- Average occupancy over at least a quarter

#### The method behind it

**Body:** Cost per available position is total monthly cost divided by positions. Cost per occupied position divides the same cost by occupied positions, which is positions times occupancy. Cost per pallet handled divides the total by handlings. The first figure shows the cost of capacity, the second the cost you must recover from stored inventory, and the third is a throughput view. The gap between the first two is the money you carry for empty space.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** At 82 percent occupancy the example above costs more per occupied position than at 95 percent, and the chart makes that visible. If the cost per occupied position is higher than a 3PL quotes, check whether the difference is empty space or labor productivity. A building that is 60 percent full may be cheaper to consolidate than to outsource. Also compare the handling figure with 3PL in and out fees.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Do not leave out corporate overhead that exists only because of the warehouse, such as IT support or insurance. Do not compare a fully loaded internal figure to a 3PL rate that excludes inventory insurance or returns handling. And avoid using peak occupancy, which understates the long run cost per pallet.

**Bullets:**

- Comparing loaded internal cost to a partial 3PL quote
- Ignoring seasonal occupancy swings
- Counting floor-stacked or overflow space as racked positions
- Forgetting damage and write-off costs

**Cta:** If your cost data sits in ERP cost centers and your pallet counts in a WMS, Netray can join them so this number updates every month without a spreadsheet.

**Faq:**

#### What is a normal cost per pallet position per month?

**Answer:** It varies widely by region, building type and labor rate. Many operations see tens of dollars per occupied position per month, but rent and wages dominate. Use your own cost data rather than a benchmark for decisions.

#### Should handling be included in storage cost?

**Answer:** Keep them separate when you compare with a 3PL, which usually bills storage per position and handling per pallet in and out. Splitting labor between the two gives a fairer comparison than one blended rate.

#### How does occupancy change the cost per pallet?

**Answer:** Most building and equipment costs are fixed, so cost per occupied position rises sharply as occupancy falls. The chart shows this curve. Filling an empty position costs little, so utilization is usually the first lever.

#### Does this include inventory carrying cost?

**Answer:** No. It covers the cost of operating the space and labor only. Capital cost, obsolescence and insurance on the goods themselves belong in an inventory carrying cost calculation.
