## Content

**Intro:** Cost per order is the number your CFO, your customers and your 3PL all ask about, and most warehouses cannot answer it quickly. This calculator builds it from the bottom up so you can see what drives it.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the monthly cost buckets from your accounts or budget: direct labor hours and wage, burden, rent and occupancy, utilities, equipment, supplies and overhead. Then enter the number of orders shipped and the average lines per order. The tool returns total operating cost, cost per order and cost per line, along with the labor share. The chart shows how unit cost falls as volume spreads the fixed costs.

#### The method

**Body:** Total cost is the sum of loaded labor and the fixed and semi-fixed lines. Loaded labor equals hours times wage times one plus the burden rate. Cost per order divides the total by orders, while cost per line divides by orders times lines per order. Cost per line is more useful for comparison because order complexity differs: a ten line order is not the same work as a single line order.

**Bullets:**

- Include indirect labor and supervisors under overhead if not in hours
- Use actual shipped orders, not orders received
- Add freight separately if you are comparing to a 3PL fee
- Review the labor share as a productivity signal

#### Reading the result

**Body:** When labor is the largest share, improving pick and pack productivity has the biggest effect. When occupancy is large, slotting, space utilization and stock reduction matter more. If cost per order rises while orders per labor hour falls, productivity is slipping. If both rise, check rent, supplies and equipment changes. Compare quarter to quarter on the same basis.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** The usual errors are leaving out overtime and temporary labor, ignoring the cost of returns and rework, and mixing parcel and pallet orders in one average. Another is comparing to a 3PL quote that excludes storage, onboarding or minimums. Make sure you compare like with like, and split by order profile where the mix is very different.

**Cta:** If you want these figures calculated from live ERP and timekeeping data instead of monthly spreadsheets, we can show how that works in your own environment.

**Faq:**

#### What is included in cost per order?

**Answer:** All operating costs of the fulfillment operation divided by orders shipped: labor, occupancy, utilities, equipment, packaging and overhead. Outbound freight is usually reported separately, so check whether a benchmark or quote includes it.

#### Is cost per order or cost per line better?

**Answer:** Cost per line is better for comparing periods or operations with different order profiles. Cost per order is simpler to communicate. Track both, and watch lines per order as a mix indicator.

#### How do I compare this to a 3PL quote?

**Answer:** Add up the quote's pick, pack, storage, receiving, minimum and account fees for your volume and divide by orders. Compare it with your fully loaded figure here, including management time and systems that you would no longer carry.

#### Why does the chart flatten at high volume?

**Answer:** Fixed costs spread over more orders, so the cost per order approaches the variable cost per order. In this model labor is held constant, so the chart illustrates fixed-cost spreading only. Real labor will rise with volume.
