## Content

**Intro:** A webhook retry policy is only useful if it keeps trying longer than your receiver is likely to be down. This calculator turns a first delay, multiplier and retry count into a real time window.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the first retry delay and the multiplier. A multiplier of two doubles each wait. Choose the number of retries, add the jitter your sender applies and set the outage length you want to survive, such as a four hour patch window. The result tells you the total window and flags whether it covers the outage. Drag the retries slider and watch the window grow geometrically; the chart shows how quickly a few extra retries extend coverage.

#### Formula

**Body:** The delays form a geometric series: first, first times m, first times m squared, up to retries terms. Their sum is first times (m^n minus 1) divided by (m minus 1), or first times n when m equals one. Attempt time adds timeouts for each of n plus 1 attempts. Jitter adds up to the stated percentage on top of each delay, so the maximum window is larger. Sender caps on a single delay, common in SaaS platforms, would reduce the totals computed here.

**Bullets:**

- Fixed intervals give a short, predictable window.
- Multipliers above three extend coverage fast but delay recovery.
- Make receivers idempotent, since retries cause duplicates.

#### ERP and agent context

**Body:** ERP webhooks and event hooks often feed agents or sync jobs. If the receiver is an MCP gateway or an ingestion service, schedule maintenance outside the window or accept dead-letter handling. Pair retries with a dead-letter queue and a replay tool so events that outlast the window are not lost. Always verify signatures and de-duplicate by event ID before acting on a delivery.

**Cta:** Netray builds event-driven ERP integrations with replay and human approval on write-back. We can review your retry and idempotency design.

**Faq:**

#### What is a sensible retry window?

**Answer:** Longer than the longest outage you accept without manual replay. Many teams target several hours to a day for business events, with a dead-letter queue and replay for anything beyond that.

#### Why add jitter?

**Answer:** If many events fail at once, synchronized retries hit the recovering receiver together. Random jitter spreads them out, which prevents repeated overload as the service comes back.

#### Do retries cause duplicate processing?

**Answer:** They can, since a receiver may process a request but fail to respond. Use an idempotency key or event ID and ignore events already handled.

#### Does a longer timeout help?

**Answer:** It adds time to each attempt but should not replace a proper window. Keep timeouts short so slow receivers do not tie up sender workers, and rely on backoff for recovery.
