## Content

**Intro:** Backlog and bookings tell you whether demand is outrunning capacity. This worksheet rolls opening backlog, bookings and shipments forward each week and shows book-to-bill and weeks of backlog.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Pull open order value at the start of the week from your ERP, then add that week's new firm bookings and shipments. Closing backlog is opening plus bookings minus shipments. Enter next week's opening as this week's closing and check it ties to the ERP open order report; a mismatch usually means cancellations, price changes or scope edits that were not booked. Export the table to Excel or PDF for the weekly review.

#### Reading the ratios

**Body:** Book-to-bill is bookings divided by shipments. Above 1.0, backlog is growing; below 1.0, it is shrinking. Weeks of backlog divides closing backlog by recent shipments and shows how long current capacity would need to clear the order book. One week is noisy, so judge the trend over four to eight weeks.

**Bullets:**

- Book-to-bill above 1.1 for many weeks: check capacity and lead time promises
- Below 0.9 for many weeks: check pipeline and pricing
- Rising weeks of backlog with flat shipments: customers will see longer lead times

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Do not mix currencies without a stated rate. Do not count blanket order totals as bookings; count releases or firm schedules. Make sure cancellations and returns are reflected as negative bookings or a separate adjustment line, or backlog will drift upward. Compare backlog to your own definition of firm, for example orders within a lead-time window, rather than long-dated contract value that cannot be built yet.

**Cta:** If weekly backlog reporting means re-exporting open orders each Monday, Netray can help automate it from your ERP, read-only and on your own infrastructure.

**Faq:**

#### What is a good book-to-bill ratio?

**Answer:** Around 1.0 means demand and output are balanced. Above 1.0 indicates growth in the order book; below 1.0 indicates a shrinking one. What is good depends on capacity and strategy, so watch the trend more than one reading.

#### Should backlog include blanket orders?

**Answer:** Usually only the firm releases or scheduled quantities, not the full contract value. Define the rule once and apply it every week, otherwise backlog will swing with contract renewals.

#### How do I handle cancellations?

**Answer:** Record them as negative bookings or a separate adjustment so closing backlog still ties to the ERP. Review the cancellations separately for cause.

#### Do weeks of backlog use shipments or capacity?

**Answer:** This worksheet uses weekly shipments. Some plants divide by planned capacity in value terms instead. Either works if you use the same basis every week.
