## Tool

**Kind:** checklist

**Scoring Note:** Aim to close every critical item before pricing. Open critical items should become written assumptions or clarification questions in your quote.

**Groups:**

#### Drawings and scope

**Items:**

**Text:** Drawing set is complete, current revision and legible

**Critical:** true

**Text:** Weld symbols, sizes and lengths are shown on every joint

**Critical:** true

**Text:** Governing weld code or specification is named (for example AWS D1.1, D1.2, D17.1, ASME IX)

**Critical:** true

Material grades and certifications required are stated

**Text:** Tolerances after welding are defined, including flatness and squareness

**Critical:** true

Quantities, release schedule and annual volume are confirmed

Bill of material matches the drawing balloons

Customer-furnished material or fixtures are listed with who supplies them

#### Welding and process

**Items:**

**Text:** WPS and PQR are available or must be qualified, with cost and lead time

**Critical:** true

**Text:** Welder qualification requirements are known (position, thickness range, process)

**Critical:** true

Preheat, interpass and post weld heat treatment requirements are identified

Filler metal type and classification are specified or free to choose

Shielding gas or flux requirements are noted

Weld access and positioning are reviewed for each joint

Weld metal volume and arc time are estimated per joint type

Distortion control, fixturing and straightening needs are planned

Repair and rework allowance is set

#### Inspection and documentation

**Items:**

**Text:** NDE methods and percentage are specified (VT, MT, PT, UT, RT)

**Critical:** true

**Text:** Inspector qualification and third party requirements are known

**Critical:** true

Weld map, joint log and traceability requirements are defined

Material test reports and certificates of conformance are required or not

First article or source inspection requirements are noted

Records retention period and delivery format are agreed

Quality system requirements on the customer purchase order are reviewed (ISO 9001, AS9100, other)

#### Finish, packaging and logistics

**Items:**

Surface prep, blasting, paint or galvanizing are specified with spec and vendor lead time

Machining after welding is included or excluded

Packaging, marking and shipping method are defined

Freight, oversize or permit issues are checked

**Text:** Delivery date is feasible against material lead time and outside processes

**Critical:** true

#### Commercial and risk

**Items:**

**Text:** Material price validity and surcharge exposure are addressed

**Critical:** true

Escalation or index clause is requested for long releases

Tooling, fixture and qualification costs are quoted as separate lines

Warranty, liability and acceptance terms are reviewed

Payment terms and tooling ownership are clear

**Text:** Assumptions and exclusions are written into the quote

**Critical:** true

## Content

**Intro:** Most weldment quoting losses come from something missed on the drawing review: an unqualified procedure, a hidden NDE requirement, or a finish that blows the lead time. This checklist walks through what to confirm before you commit a price.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Print or tick items on screen while you read the RFQ package. Treat critical items as gates: if you cannot close one, either get an answer from the customer or write the assumption into the quote. Export the completed list and attach it to the estimate record so the next person knows what was assumed.

#### What each group protects

**Body:** Drawings and scope make sure you price the right revision. Welding and process covers qualification and the actual arc time and consumables. Inspection and documentation covers hidden costs such as radiography, source inspection and records. Finish and logistics catches long lead outside processes. Commercial and risk records the exposure you are taking.

**Bullets:**

- Qualification of procedures and welders can add weeks
- Percent NDE changes cost more than most weld details
- Galvanizing and paint queues often set delivery

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Quoting from a sketch without a governing code, assuming the customer will waive NDE, and ignoring distortion on long welded frames are the usual leaks. Another is pricing material at today's price on a long release schedule with no escalation language.

**Cta:** If your quotes live in an ERP, Netray can help turn this review into a structured record that flags missing items before an estimate is released.

**Faq:**

#### Which code governs my quote?

**Answer:** The one named on the drawing or purchase order. Common ones are AWS D1.1 for structural steel, D1.2 for aluminum, D17.1 for aerospace fusion welding, and ASME Section IX for pressure work. If none is named, ask.

#### Why separate procedure qualification cost?

**Answer:** A WPS and PQR may need testing and lab work before production starts. Quoting it as its own line keeps the unit price clean and shows the customer the cost of the requirement.

#### How much NDE should I assume?

**Answer:** Only what the documents state. If the RFQ is silent, list your assumption in the quote, such as visual inspection only, so any added NDE becomes a priced change.

#### Does this replace contract review under ISO 9001?

**Answer:** It supports it. A formal contract review record is still needed under your quality system, and this checklist can serve as an input to that record.
