## Content

**Intro:** Operating factor is the share of paid welding time that the arc is actually burning, and it drives most of the labor cost in a weldment. This calculator converts weld metal weight to arc time, divides by operating factor, and adds fit-up, grinding, overhead, filler and gas.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the pounds of weld metal per part, taken from your joint design or the weld metal volume calculator, and the deposition rate of your process. Set an operating factor that matches how the work is really done, then add fit-up, cleanup, labor and overhead rates, and consumable prices. The outputs show cost per part and per job, and the sweep shows how sensitive cost is to operating factor.

#### The cost model

**Body:** Arc time equals weld metal weight over deposition rate. Welding time equals arc time over operating factor. Labor cost is total hours times rate, overhead is a percentage of labor, filler cost is weld metal over deposition efficiency times price, and gas is flow times arc hours times price per cubic foot. This is the standard approach used in welding cost handbooks, kept to the terms an estimator can verify.

**Bullets:**

- Manual SMAW and GTAW often run a low operating factor
- Semiautomatic wire processes run higher with good fixtures
- Robotic and mechanized cells can run much higher

#### What the sweep tells you

**Body:** Cost per part falls sharply as operating factor climbs from 10 percent to 40 percent and then flattens. That is why positioners, fixtures, and pre-staged material often save more than a faster wire. If the curve at your current factor is steep, fixture design is a better investment than a higher deposition rate.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Using the deposition rate as an hourly rate ignores operating factor and understates labor by two to four times. Forgetting grinding, fit-up and rework makes small parts look cheap. Track actual hours per part in your ERP and recalibrate the factor each quarter.

**Cta:** If you want estimated versus actual weld hours compared per work order, Netray can build that from your ERP labor reporting without sending data off site.

**Faq:**

#### What operating factor should I use?

**Answer:** Use your own timed data. As a rough planning range, manual stick and TIG are often low, semiautomatic wire higher, and mechanized or robotic welding highest. Fixturing and part handling matter more than the process label.

#### Why divide by operating factor?

**Answer:** Paid welding time includes positioning, chipping, brushing and moving. Arc time is only the burning share, so dividing arc time by operating factor gives the clock time you pay for.

#### Is overhead applied to labor only?

**Answer:** Yes in this model, which is a common shop convention. If your accounting applies overhead by machine hour or to material, adjust the percentage so the total matches your costing.

#### How do I get weld metal weight?

**Answer:** Compute joint cross-section area times length times 0.284 lb per cubic inch for steel, or use the weld metal volume calculator. Add reinforcement for an honest figure.
