## Content

**Intro:** Weld metal volume drives filler purchase, arc time and distortion. This calculator gives the cross-section area and weight per meter for a single V-groove butt weld, and the total for any joint length.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter plate thickness, root gap, root face and the included groove angle. Add the reinforcement height you expect on the cap and the joint length. The calculator returns area in square millimeters, kilograms per meter, and the weight for the full joint. Feed the kg per meter figure into the welding cost and filler consumption calculators.

**Bullets:**

- Included angle is the full opening of the V, not the bevel on one plate
- Root face reduces groove depth
- Use the density of the filler alloy
- Add 5 to 15 percent for fit-up variation when estimating

#### The geometry

**Body:** The groove below the root face is a trapezoid slice. Its area is the rectangle gap times thickness plus a triangle pair of depth squared times tan of the half angle. The reinforcement is approximated as a parabolic segment, two thirds of the top width times the cap height. Weight equals area times density, converted to kilograms per meter.

#### Worked example

**Body:** For 20 mm plate, 2 mm gap, 60 degree included angle, 1.5 mm root face and 2 mm reinforcement: depth is 18.5 mm, top width is about 23.4 mm, groove area is about 40 plus 197.6, near 238 mm2, cap is about 31 mm2, so total area is near 269 mm2. At 7.85 g per cm3 that is close to 2.1 kg per meter. Doubling the angle opening raises it sharply.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** The most frequent error is confusing included angle with bevel angle, which changes the area by a factor of about two. Others are forgetting that double-V and J-grooves need different formulas, ignoring backing strips, and using steel density for aluminum.

**Bullets:**

- Bevel angle used instead of included angle
- Double-V joints need two half grooves
- Fillet welds need a separate formula
- Density of wrong alloy

**Cta:** Netray can connect weld joint data in your PLM or ERP routings to calculations like this so estimates stay consistent across quotes.

**Faq:**

#### Is this valid for fillet welds?

**Answer:** No. A fillet weld is roughly a triangle with area leg squared divided by two, plus convexity. This tool is for single V-groove butt joints. Use the area from this tool only where the joint is a V-groove with a flat root face.

#### What density should I use?

**Answer:** Use 7.85 g per cm3 for carbon and low alloy steel, about 8.0 for austenitic stainless, and about 2.7 for aluminum. Use the filler alloy density, not the base metal, if they differ noticeably.

#### Why add an allowance?

**Answer:** Root gap, edge preparation and welder technique vary, and every extra millimeter of gap or angle adds metal. Estimators commonly add 5 to 15 percent. Weighing consumables against actual jobs helps you calibrate the allowance.

#### How do I use the result for filler purchase?

**Answer:** Weld metal weight is deposited metal. Divide by deposition efficiency to get purchased filler. The filler consumption calculator on this site does that and rounds up to full spools or boxes.
