## Content

**Intro:** Every groove weld pulls the parts together as the weld metal cools, and a fabricator who ignores it ends up with assemblies that are short or out of square. This calculator turns your joint geometry into a transverse and longitudinal shrinkage figure you can add to cut lengths.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the plate thickness, root opening, groove angle and style, and the crown height. The tool computes the weld cross-section area, then applies the shrinkage relations. Read transverse shrinkage as the amount to add to the length of one member per butt joint, and longitudinal shrinkage as the expected shortening along the seam length you entered. Run the chart to see how quickly shrinkage grows with thickness.

**Bullets:**

- Use the thinner plate for thickness
- Count one allowance per butt joint in the assembly
- Double V grooves shrink less and distort less than single V

#### The formulas behind it

**Body:** Groove area is root gap times thickness plus a triangle whose size comes from the groove angle. Reinforcement is approximated as 0.67 of the face width times crown height. Transverse shrinkage uses the classic butt joint relation S = 0.2 x Aw / t + 0.05 x d, where Aw is weld area, t is thickness and d is root opening, all in the same length unit. Longitudinal shrinkage uses the rule of thumb dL = 0.025 x (Aw / A) x L, where A is the plate cross-section area.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** A half inch plate with a 60 degree single V and a one eighth inch gap shrinks roughly a sixteenth to an eighth of an inch across the joint. Thicker plate and wider grooves push this up fast because the area grows with the square of thickness. Longitudinal shrinkage is usually small per foot but adds up over long girders and is the reason beams bow.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** The biggest error is applying the allowance once for an assembly with several joints. Another is using the result for stainless or aluminum, which shrink and distort more than carbon steel. Wide root gaps and heavy reinforcement also inflate shrinkage, so tighten fit-up before adding more allowance.

**Bullets:**

- Do not use these numbers for aluminum or austenitic stainless
- Back-step or balanced sequence reduces real distortion
- Record actual shrinkage on the first article and adjust

**Cta:** If your ERP holds routings and as-built dimensions, an agent can compare actual shrinkage to the allowance used and flag drift by weld procedure. Netray can set that up on your own data.

**Faq:**

#### Does this work for fillet welds?

**Answer:** No. The relations are for groove (butt) joints. Fillet welds cause angular distortion and smaller transverse shrinkage that depends on leg size and restraint, so use a trial weld or a dedicated fillet estimate.

#### Why does thickness appear in the denominator?

**Answer:** Thicker plate has more cold metal to restrain the weld, so a given weld area shrinks the joint less per unit of area. Total area still grows quickly, so overall shrinkage rises with thickness.

#### Should I add the allowance to every part?

**Answer:** Add it once per butt joint, usually to one of the two members. Adding it to both parts doubles the correction and leaves the assembly long.

#### How accurate is the longitudinal figure?

**Answer:** It is a rule of thumb for carbon steel with typical heat input. Treat it as a planning number, and measure the first article on any long or tolerance-critical seam.
