**Notes:** Record the heat or lot number so that every weld can be traced back to the consumable certificate (for example an EN 10204 3.1 certificate). Net consumed removes stubs, so consumed cost is on issued minus returned stock. Stub loss is shown as a separate share. Rewrite units if you issue by spool, box or electrode count.

## Content

**Intro:** Consumable control is a quality requirement and a cost line. This log records what left the store, what came back and what ended up as stubs, with heat or lot numbers so a weld can be traced to its filler.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the log

**Body:** Add a row each time a welder or foreman draws consumables. Enter the job, the specific product, the heat or lot number and the issued quantity. When stock comes back, enter the returned good quantity, and enter stubs and scrap separately. The sheet calculates net consumption and cost. Export weekly to Excel for costing or to the quality department for traceability audits. Keep the paper or scanned certificates for each lot together with this log.

**Bullets:**

- Issue low hydrogen electrodes from a heated oven only
- Never mix lots on one row
- Record returns the same day
- Weigh wire spools rather than estimating

#### Why traceability matters

**Body:** Fabrication codes and customer specifications often require that filler metals can be traced to the certificate and the weld. Without a lot number on the issue record, a failed chemical or mechanical test cannot be tied back to the welds that used that lot. The log gives you that link in a simple form. Cost is the second reason. Rod and wire are a small share of total weld cost compared with labor, but over a year the stubs, spoiled rods and over-issues become visible in the numbers.

#### Reading the example

**Body:** The sample rows show issue and return for four processes. The summary shows stub share, which for stick electrodes is driven by stub length discipline, and the average cost per net kilogram taken from the shop. A stub share much above the normal range for stick work can indicate poor discipline or electrodes discarded because of moisture. Compare lots when one shows unusually high returns, as that may point to damaged packaging.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** A consumables log is only useful if it is used every time.

**Bullets:**

- Issuing without a lot number so traceability is lost
- Leaving unused electrodes in the open and issuing them again as good
- Not separating stubs from returned stock
- Mixing different diameters in one row
- Costing on issued quantity when returns are significant

**Cta:** If consumable issues should post as inventory transactions in your ERP with lot traceability, we can help design that without double entry.

**Faq:**

#### Why record the heat or lot number?

**Answer:** It ties each weld to a mill or manufacturer certificate. If a consumable fails a test or a recall occurs, you can find every job that used that lot. Many fabrication and pressure equipment specifications require it.

#### What is a normal stub loss for stick electrodes?

**Answer:** Stub length is usually specified as about 40 to 50 mm, which on a 350 mm electrode is roughly 11 to 14 percent of the length. Real losses also include spoiled electrodes, so use your own history rather than a fixed number.

#### Should returned electrodes be reissued?

**Answer:** Only if they were kept dry according to the manufacturer's storage rules. Low hydrogen electrodes returned from the field normally go back into a holding oven and are reissued within limits, or are discarded. Follow your procedure.

#### Can the log handle spools and boxes?

**Answer:** Yes. Change the unit label or enter the weight of the spool in kilograms. Use the same unit consistently within one log so totals and cost stay correct.
