Fishbowl Inventory Release Notes, Updates and Upgrade Checklist

Question
fishbowl inventory release notes

Also searched as

  • fishbowl inventory updates

  • how to update fishbowl server

Short answer

Fishbowl publishes release notes with each version through its help center and support site; read them for the version you are moving to, not just the latest. For on-prem installs, an update means upgrading the Fishbowl server first, then clients, after a verified database backup. Test in a copy of production before upgrading the live system.

Applies to: Fishbowl Inventory on-prem server editions; Fishbowl Drive updates are managed by Fishbowl

How to upgrade safely

  1. 1Find the release notes for your current version and your target version on Fishbowl's help center. Read every version in between if you are skipping releases.
  2. 2Check compatibility: operating system, database version, Java or runtime requirements, integrations and any custom reports or modules.
  3. 3Take a full backup of the Fishbowl database and the server files, and verify you can restore it.
  4. 4Restore the backup to a test server and run the upgrade there first.
  5. 5Test the workflows you rely on: sales order to shipment, purchasing and receiving, manufacturing orders, scanners, integrations and key reports.
  6. 6Schedule the production upgrade for a quiet window and tell users. Upgrade the server first, then update each client to match.
  7. 7After the upgrade, check integrations, scheduled tasks and custom reports again, and keep the backup until the new version has run for a full cycle.

Reading release notes properly

Release notes list new features, fixes and known issues. For an admin, the useful parts are changes that affect data (new required fields, schema changes), integrations (API changes, deprecated endpoints) and reports (changed tables or columns). Search the notes for each integration and custom report you use.

I do not list specific version numbers here because they change; use Fishbowl's official release notes for the current ones.

Server, client and database

Fishbowl is a server and client application on a MySQL database, so versions must match between server and clients. A client that is out of step may refuse to connect or behave strangely after the server is updated.

Large databases may take noticeably longer to migrate on first start. Plan for that, and do not interrupt the process.

After the upgrade

Monitor for the first few days: integration errors, failed scheduled jobs and user reports of missing fields. Keep a short list of the tests you ran so the next upgrade is faster.

If something breaks, restoring the pre-upgrade backup is the safe rollback, which is why the verified backup matters.

Common pitfalls

  • !Upgrading production without a tested restore.
  • !Skipping several versions and missing a notice that required an intermediate step.
  • !Forgetting to update clients and integration software after the server.
  • !Custom reports and API integrations breaking silently after schema or endpoint changes.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

An on-prem assistant that has indexed the release notes and your own integration and report inventory can answer 'which of our custom reports touch tables changed in this release', saving a manual review. It reads your documents locally; nothing is sent to a public model.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Fishbowl release notes?

On Fishbowl's help center and support site, per version. Read the notes for your target version and any versions you skip.

How do I update Fishbowl?

Back up, test on a copy, then upgrade the server and update each client to the same version. Fishbowl Drive is updated by Fishbowl.

Do I need to update every version?

Not always, but check the notes: some releases require an intermediate step. Support can confirm the supported upgrade path.

Can I roll back a Fishbowl upgrade?

Yes if you took a verified backup before upgrading. Restore the database and reinstall the previous server version.

How to Back Up Fishbowl Inventory (and Restore It)

Fishbowl stores everything in a MySQL database on the Fishbowl server, so a backup means copying that database plus your attachments and custom reports. Use Fishbowl's built-in backup for a quick copy, schedule it, add a mysqldump or file-level backup for redundancy, copy the result offsite and test a restore regularly.

How-to

Fishbowl Inventory API Documentation: Auth, Endpoints and Examples

Fishbowl exposes a JSON REST API from its own server. You log in with an app name, app ID and a Fishbowl user to receive a token, send that token as a Bearer header, and call resource endpoints for parts, inventory, sales orders, purchase orders and imports. Fishbowl publishes reference documentation online and the server can show interactive docs for your own version.

Error fix

Fix Fishbowl Error: MySQL Server Has Gone Away

This error means the Fishbowl Server lost its connection to the underlying MySQL database, usually because a session sat idle past MySQL's wait_timeout, MySQL itself restarted, or a large import or report exceeded max_allowed_packet. Raise the relevant MySQL timeout and packet settings, confirm the MySQL service is actually running, and restart both MySQL and the Fishbowl Server service.

How to Create a Generic Inquiry in Acumatica

Generic Inquiries (GI) are Acumatica's no-code query builder for joining tables, adding filters, and exposing the result as an inquiry screen, dashboard data source, or API endpoint. Open System > Customization > Generic Inquiry, add your base table, define joins and conditions, then run and save. No SQL or customization project is required.

Error fix

Fix Odoo AccessError: You Are Not Allowed to Access Records

Odoo raises AccessError when a user's security groups do not grant a CRUD right on a model through ir.model.access.csv, or when an ir.rule record rule filters the specific record out for that user or company. Fix it by adding the user to the group named in the error, editing the model's access rights, or reviewing the record rule's domain under Settings > Technical > Security.

How to Void a Check in Sage 100

Sage 100 voids checks through Accounts Payable > Main > Check and Payment Voiding. Select the bank code, choose the check number, and Sage reverses the Cash Disbursements Journal entry and reopens the invoice it paid. A check that already cleared in Bank Reconciliation or falls in a closed period needs an extra step before it can be voided cleanly.
