QAD vs Plex: Which Fits a Discrete Manufacturer?

Question
QAD vs Plex: which ERP is better for a discrete manufacturer?

  • should we move from QAD to Plex

Short answer

Neither is universally better. Plex is a single cloud platform that combines ERP with MES, quality and shop floor control, which suits plants that want one system and are willing to adopt its standard processes. QAD is a configurable ERP strongest in multi-site, multi-country manufacturing, with a longer history on Progress and more deployment choices. Decide on your processes, footprint and integration needs, not on brand.

Applies to: Discrete and process manufacturers evaluating or reconsidering QAD Adaptive ERP or Plex. This is a decision aid, not a vendor endorsement. Verify current capabilities with each vendor.

How to run the decision

  1. 1Write down your must-have processes: shop floor data collection, quality and traceability, customer-specific compliance, EDI, multi-currency, and multi-plant planning.
  2. 2List your sites, countries and legal entities. Multi-country statutory needs often weigh heavily here.
  3. 3Map your current integrations: PLCs, SCADA, PLM, CRM, WMS, BI. Count what must be rebuilt in each option.
  4. 4Ask each vendor to demonstrate your three hardest scenarios with your data, not a generic demo.
  5. 5Check hosting and data access: cloud only or other options, how you extract data, and which APIs are included.
  6. 6Talk to reference customers of similar size and industry, preferably ones the vendor did not choose, and ask what they would do differently.
  7. 7Build a five-year total cost view: licences or subscription, implementation, integrations, internal staffing, and exit costs.
  8. 8Plan migration realistically. Moving ERP is a business change programme, so include data cleansing, training, and a parallel run period.

Architecture and delivery model

Plex was built as a cloud platform from the start, with ERP and manufacturing execution functions in one multi-tenant system, and is now part of Rockwell Automation. Customers get frequent updates from the vendor and less control over timing and customisation.

QAD Adaptive ERP grew out of MFG/PRO on Progress OpenEdge and is now offered as a cloud service as well as in other deployment options depending on contract. It gives more room to configure and extend, but ties you into the Progress ecosystem and QAD's release approach.

The practical difference for IT is who owns what. With Plex, you manage configuration and integrations while the vendor runs the platform. With QAD in a managed or self-run model, you may carry more operational duties, and gain more flexibility in return.

Shop floor depth versus global ERP breadth

Plex is often shortlisted by plants where shop floor execution is the core need: machine data, work instructions, quality checks, traceability for automotive, and metal-working operations. Having MES inside the same data model reduces integration work.

QAD is often shortlisted by manufacturers with several plants and legal entities across countries, where statutory reporting, intercompany flows, and supply chain planning across a network matter most. It also carries long-standing solutions for automotive, life sciences and consumer goods.

These are tendencies, not rules. Test both against your specific scenarios, since either product can be a poor fit if your process sits at the edge of its standard design.

Customisation, data access and integration

QAD sites commonly extend the system through Progress ABL customisation, which is powerful but creates upgrade work. Plex leans toward configuration and supported APIs, which keeps upgrades smoother but limits deep changes to core logic.

Data access matters for analytics and AI. Ask how you get a full, governed copy of your data: direct database access, scheduled extracts, or APIs with rate limits. A platform that is hard to read from will make every BI and AI project harder.

For private or air-gapped AI, check whether the data can be replicated to your own environment. With a SaaS-only system, any on-prem AI works from extracts rather than live tables.

Switching costs and honest limits

Moving from QAD to Plex, or the reverse, is a full re-implementation. Item masters, bills of material, routings, open orders, and history all need cleansing and remapping, and integrations must be rebuilt. Budget for it as a multi-year business project, not an IT upgrade.

Staying put is sometimes the right answer. If your current system meets your processes and your pain comes from poor reporting or integration, an overlay of analytics or AI over the existing ERP may solve the problem at a fraction of the cost and risk.

Do not choose on feature checklists alone. The people who will use it daily, and the vendor's ability to support your industry in your region, usually decide the outcome.

Common pitfalls

  • !Choosing from vendor demos built on clean demo data instead of your own hard scenarios.
  • !Underestimating data migration and cleansing effort for BOMs, routings and open orders.
  • !Assuming cloud means no integration work. Shop floor, EDI and BI links still need design.
  • !Ignoring how you will extract your data for analytics and AI before signing.
  • !Replacing ERP to fix a reporting problem that an analytics layer could solve.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

Whichever platform you run, an AI assistant grounded in the ERP data can answer operational questions without waiting for a replacement project. ERPray connects read-only to supported ERPs and shows the query behind every answer. It is not a replacement for an ERP decision, but it can reduce pressure to switch when the real issue is visibility, and it can run on-prem where the data policy requires.

Frequently asked questions

Is Plex only for automotive suppliers?

No. Plex is widely associated with automotive and metal-working suppliers, but it is used across discrete manufacturing, including aerospace, electronics, and food and beverage. Confirm that the vendor has references in your sub-industry and your region before treating it as a fit.

Does QAD still have a future?

QAD continues to sell and develop Adaptive ERP and has a large installed base. As with any vendor, check the current roadmap, ownership and support commitments in writing for the versions you run, and ask for references on recent cloud migrations rather than relying on history.

Can we run AI on-prem with Plex?

Plex is a vendor-hosted cloud platform, so any on-prem AI works from data pulled through supported APIs or extracts. That can work well for reporting and analysis, but it is not live access to the underlying database. Check data export limits and licensing terms first.

How long does an ERP migration take?

For a single mid-size plant, expect many months, and for multi-site rollouts one to three years is common. Time is driven by data cleansing, process redesign, integrations, and training more than by software installation. Phase by site or by module to limit risk.

Should we get a third-party assessment?

An independent view is worth it for a decision of this size, provided the assessor has no commission from either vendor. Ask for evidence from similar implementations, and use the assessment to challenge your own requirements, not just to compare vendors.

Plex REST API Returns 401 or 403: How to Troubleshoot Authentication

A 401 means Plex did not accept your credentials at all, usually a wrong, expired, or wrongly placed API key, or a key from the wrong environment. A 403 means the credentials were valid but the app or user is not permitted to use that API or data. Work through key, environment, app subscription, and access rights in that order.

How to Set Up an EDI Trading Partner in Plex Systems

Setting up an EDI trading partner in Plex's EDI Data Manager means defining the partner and their connection details, mapping the specific document types they will exchange (purchase orders, forecasts, shipping schedules, ASNs, invoices) to Plex's Customer and Part records, and running the partner through test mode before flipping them to production.

QAD Says "Unable to Connect to the Application Server": How to Fix It

This error almost always means the Progress OpenEdge AppServer broker behind QAD is stopped, unreachable over the network, or out of licensed connections, not a database problem. Confirm the broker process is running and healthy in OpenEdge Explorer, check the port and firewall path from the client, then restart the broker with clean agent settings.

Use probkup online to take a consistent full backup of a running QAD database, add incremental backups between fulls, verify the backup with prorest -vp, and restore with prorest into a prepared structure. A file-level copy of a running database is not a valid backup. Pair backups with after-imaging if you need point-in-time recovery.

Fix Odoo AccessError: You Are Not Allowed to Access Records

Odoo raises AccessError when a user's security groups do not grant a CRUD right on a model through ir.model.access.csv, or when an ir.rule record rule filters the specific record out for that user or company. Fix it by adding the user to the group named in the error, editing the model's access rights, or reviewing the record rule's domain under Settings > Technical > Security.
