What Is API Gateway?
Also known as: API management, API proxy, API gateway ERP
Definition
An API gateway is a server that sits in front of one or more back-end services and acts as their single entry point. It authenticates callers, enforces rate limits, routes requests, and logs traffic so each back end does not have to.
API Gateway Explained
Without a gateway every service handles its own authentication, throttling and logging, and every client must know each service address. A gateway centralizes these concerns. Typical features are API key or OAuth 2.0 token validation, rate limiting and quotas, request and response transformation, caching, TLS termination, versioned routes and an audit log of every call.
For ERPs the value is protection and control. An ERP API is often expensive to call and has limited concurrency, and a runaway script or a new integration can slow down order entry. A gateway can cap calls per client, block unknown callers, and hide the ERP's own address and credentials. It also lets a team expose a stable, curated set of endpoints while the ERP behind it changes during an upgrade.
Gateways come as products (Kong, Apigee, AWS API Gateway, Azure API Management, WSO2 and others) and as built-in features of an integration platform such as Infor ION API. On-premises deployments often use an open-source gateway in the DMZ so no traffic leaves the network.
For AI agents the gateway becomes a policy point. An agent should call the ERP through a narrow, read-only route with a service identity, not through a shared admin login. The gateway records which agent asked what and when, which supports audit, and it can block write methods unless a human approval token is present.
Why It Matters
- It protects the ERP from overload and from callers that should not reach it.
- Central logging gives a single audit trail of who called which ERP endpoint.
- It decouples clients from the ERP, so upgrades and migrations break fewer integrations.
- It is the natural place to enforce read-only access and approvals for AI agents.
In Practice
A plant exposes three ERP lookups to a chatbot: item availability, open orders and work order status. A gateway route maps each to the ERP API, allows only GET, limits the bot's service account to 60 calls a minute, and logs every request with the user on whose behalf it ran. When an upgrade changes the underlying ERP endpoints, only the gateway mapping changes and the chatbot keeps working.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an API gateway the same as middleware?
No. A gateway manages access to APIs: security, limits, routing. Middleware or an iPaaS moves and transforms data between systems. Some products do both.
Do I need an API gateway for an on-prem ERP?
It is advisable when external systems or AI agents call the ERP, because it adds authentication, throttling and logs the ERP may lack.
Can a gateway run without the cloud?
Yes. Several gateways are open source or self-hosted and can run inside a private network.
Does a gateway make AI access safer?
It helps by limiting methods, rate and scope, and recording calls. It does not replace ERP role security or human approval on writes.

An API (Application Programming Interface) is a defined contract that lets one software system request data or trigger functions in another, specifying the available operations, the structure of requests and responses, and the rules for authentication and error handling.
REST API
A REST API is a web interface that exposes application data as addressable resources over HTTP, using standard verbs such as GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE, stateless requests, and conventional status codes, typically exchanging JSON.
Middleware
Middleware is software that sits between applications and handles the communication, transformation, routing, and reliability concerns of moving data between them, so that the applications themselves do not need to know about each other directly.
Webhook
A webhook is an HTTP callback in which a source system automatically sends an HTTP request to a subscriber-provided URL when a defined event occurs, pushing notification to the consumer instead of requiring the consumer to poll for changes.
MCP (Model Context Protocol)
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data sources, so any compliant client can use any compliant server without custom integration code for each pair.
