What NDIA is and how suppliers use it
NDIA is a membership association and event organizer, not a regulator or certifier. Suppliers use its conferences and chapters to meet primes and government program offices and to follow policy on acquisition, cybersecurity and the industrial base. Membership does not confer any contract eligibility or compliance status.
For a manufacturer, the practical value is information and relationships. The compliance obligations come from contracts and regulations, not from the association.
Compliance load on a defense supplier
A defense supplier typically has to protect controlled unclassified information under DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171, manage export-controlled technical data under ITAR or EAR, and keep specialty metals and counterfeit-parts controls. Where CMMC applies, the required level is stated in the contract.
These obligations reach the ERP, because it holds part data, drawings, bills of materials and supplier records that may qualify as controlled data. Where the system is hosted, who administers it and which users can see which records all matter.
- Identify which ERP fields and attachments are CUI or export-controlled
- Limit access by role and keep audit logs
- Confirm hosting and administrators meet the contract's requirements

DFARS 252.204-7012 Compliance Self-Assessment
A 10-question self-assessment covering the full DFARS 7012 clause: NIST 800-171 implementation, SPRS, incident reporting, cloud requirements, and flowdown.
Quoting, costing and ERP in defense work
Defense quotes often require cost breakdowns by labor, material and overhead, and contractor accounting systems must support the cost rules in the contract. Lot traceability, first article records, nonconformance and corrective action history, and configuration control per revision all need to live in a system the shop can defend in an audit.
Shops use ERP systems such as Epicor Kinetic, Infor SyteLine/CloudSuite Industrial, DELMIAworks, Global Shop Solutions, JobBOSS, E2 and NetSuite, with varying fit for government cost accounting. Check requirements before assuming a system complies.
Private AI where data cannot leave the building
For contractors handling CUI or export-controlled data, sending ERP content to a public AI service is often not an option. Open-weight models served on the customer's own GPUs, or in an environment that meets the contract's requirements, can answer questions over ERP data and controlled documents, find parts and lots affected by a nonconformance, and draft routine records for human review.
Netray does not hold or claim CMMC or ITAR status. The architecture is meant to help the customer keep data inside their own boundary and meet their own obligations. It does not replace the compliance assessment, which stays with the customer and their assessor.
Frequently asked questions
What is NDIA?
NDIA is the National Defense Industrial Association, a U.S. non-profit that brings together industry, government and academia on national security topics. It holds conferences, exhibitions and local chapter events. In searches it is often confused with Australia's NDIA, the National Disability Insurance Agency.
Does joining NDIA make a company CMMC or ITAR compliant?
No. NDIA membership is separate from any compliance status. CMMC, DFARS and ITAR obligations arise from contracts and regulations, and a company must meet them through its own controls and, where required, a formal assessment or registration.
What compliance do small defense suppliers usually need?
It depends on the contract, but commonly includes DFARS 252.204-7012 with NIST SP 800-171 controls, CMMC at the level the contract sets, export control handling under ITAR or EAR, and AS9100 flow-downs. Read the contract clauses first rather than assuming a standard set.
Can ERP data be used with AI in a defense environment?
Yes, if the deployment keeps controlled data within an environment that meets the contract's requirements. That usually means on-premises or private hosting, role-based access, logging and human approval on write-back. Confirm the design with your compliance lead.
