ERP KPI Governance Maturity Assessment

Many companies have plenty of KPIs but no agreement on what they mean or where they come from. This ten question assessment scores definition, source, ownership, speed and traceability of your KPI process and suggests next steps.

How to use the assessment

Answer based on what actually happens in a normal month, not what your policy says. Ideally two people answer independently, for example the controller and an operations manager, and compare. Differences between their answers show where definitions or data are not shared. Your score is the percentage of the maximum, and each band comes with recommended next steps.

What governance means here

KPI governance is the set of simple habits that keep numbers consistent: one written definition, one data source, one owner, a record of changes and a review that produces actions. It is not a tool. A spreadsheet with discipline beats a dashboard with five competing definitions.

Reading your band

Low scores usually come from missing definitions and too many spreadsheets, which are cheap to fix. Middle scores often come from good intentions in each department with no shared catalogue. High scores mean the work shifts to automation and keeping the catalogue small. Retake the test each half year to track progress.

Common mistakes

Buying a BI tool before agreeing definitions only moves the arguments onto a prettier screen. Another mistake is measuring everything. More KPIs without owners lowers trust. Start with a few KPIs that drive decisions this quarter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a low score a problem?

It is a starting point. Most manufacturers with several plants or legacy ERP land in the lower half, because KPIs grew report by report. The recommendations are low cost first steps.

Who should take this assessment?

The controller, an operations leader and the ERP or BI owner. Comparing their separate answers is more valuable than one person's score.

How often should I repeat it?

Every six months is enough. Repeat it also after an ERP upgrade or acquisition, which tends to break definitions and sources.

Does it need ERP details?

No. The questions are about process and habits, so it works for SAP, Oracle, Infor, Epicor, Dynamics, NetSuite or any other system.
