TPM Autonomous Maintenance Cleaning, Inspection and Lubrication Standard
In TPM, autonomous maintenance (jishu hozen) puts daily cleaning, inspection and lubrication in the hands of operators. This template builds the one-page standard that tells them what to do, how long it takes and what to do when something is wrong.

TPM Autonomous Maintenance Standard Template
Autonomous Maintenance Standard: CNC Lathe 04
Company: Northfield Precision Ltd Asset ID: AST-00417 Area: Cell 3, Machining Frequency: Every shift Time allowed: 10 minutes Issue date: 2026-10-20
1. Cleaning
Remove chips from chuck, way covers and coolant tray. Wipe the door glass and the control panel.
2. Inspection
Check coolant level and concentration, hydraulic pressure gauge, chuck jaw wear, air pressure and unusual noise or leaks.
3. Lubrication
Check the central lube reservoir level. Top up with the specified grade only. Use the color-coded tag to confirm.
Normal limits
Hydraulic pressure within the green band of the gauge. Coolant concentration as on the tank label. No visible leaks.
If a limit is not met
Stop the machine if safe to do so, tag it, call the maintenance technician and raise a work order.
Operator record
| Date | Shift | Cleaned | Inspected | Lubricated | Abnormality tag raised | Initials |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Approvals
Follow your lockout procedure before cleaning moving parts and never reach into a machine that is not locked out. Use the manufacturer manual for lubricant grades and limits.
Connect operator checks to work orders
Optional review of how abnormality tags could become maintenance requests in your ERP.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the template
Write the standard with the operators who run the machine and a maintenance technician. Fill in the machine, frequency and time allowed, then list specific cleaning, inspection and lubrication points. Add the normal limits as something an operator can see without instruments where possible, such as a green band on a gauge. Describe the action when a limit is not met. Print the document, laminate it and mount it at the machine with the record table beside it.
- Keep the total time under what operators can do in a shift
- Name each point so a new person can find it
- Use photos in the printed version for hard-to-find points
Why cleaning is inspection
The first step of autonomous maintenance is initial cleaning, because cleaning exposes leaks, cracks, loose bolts and contamination sources. After that the team works to eliminate sources of contamination and hard-to-access places, then writes provisional standards like this one. Later steps cover general inspection training and standardization. Tie the standard to your 5S so tools and lubricants have a marked place.
Common mistakes
Standards fail when they are too long, written by someone who does not run the machine, or never reviewed. Operators must be trained and shown that abnormality tags lead to action, or they stop raising them. Track how many tags are raised and closed in the daily huddle. If your CMMS or ERP maintenance module supports it, create preventive work orders for the items operators cannot handle.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CIL mean in TPM?
CIL stands for cleaning, inspection and lubrication. It is the set of basic care tasks operators perform on their own equipment to keep it in basic condition and to spot early signs of deterioration.
How long should the operator task take?
Most plants aim for five to fifteen minutes per shift. If the standard takes longer, split the tasks by frequency, with weekly and monthly items carried out on a rotating schedule.
Who owns the standard?
The production team that runs the machine owns the standard and the daily execution. Maintenance supports with training, technical limits and fixing what operators tag. The standard should be reviewed at least once a year.
Is this a replacement for preventive maintenance?
No. It complements planned maintenance by catching early problems and keeping the machine clean. Tasks that need tools, special skills or lockout beyond operator training stay with maintenance.
Netray can help link operator abnormality reports to maintenance work orders in your ERP so nothing is lost between shifts.
