Short answer
MMPV, the MM period-closing transaction, moves the current material posting period in table MARV to the next period. A date check error means the period you are trying to close does not follow the current MARV period, a prior period was skipped, or documents and locks prevent the move. Run the check-only mode first, read the log, and compare the MARV values with the company code's intended period.
Applies to: SAP ECC 6.0 and S/4HANA on-premise MM; exact message wording varies by release
How to resolve an MMPV date or period check error
- 1Run MMPV for the company code with 'Check only' (no update) first, so you see the messages without changing anything.
- 2Read the current period in MARV via SE16N: fields LFGJA and LFMON are the current period, and VMGJA/VMMON the previous one.
- 3Compare to the period you are closing. MMPV can only move forward one period at a time, and the target must follow the current period.
- 4If periods have been skipped, run MMPV repeatedly for each month rather than jumping, or use MMRV to check allowed posting periods.
- 5Resolve the objects named in the log: other users running MMPV, a held lock (SM12) on the company code, or documents in the period that block closing.
- 6If MARV is genuinely wrong, correct it using the period-correction function (OMSY) under your controller's approval.
- 7Run MMPV again in update mode, then verify MARV and test a posting in the new period with MIGO.
What MMPV actually changes
MMPV does not post documents. It updates the period control record in MARV so goods movements are posted to the new period and the previous period becomes the allowed prior period. Together with MMRV (allowed posting periods) and OB52 (FI periods), it defines where users can post.
That is why the error often points to a mismatch between the three: MM period (MARV), FI period (OB52) and the document date the user used.
In S/4HANA the same logic applies, and with the Universal Journal your finance team still opens and closes FI periods separately. Coordinate the order of the steps.
Typical causes
Skipped periods. If the last closing was months ago, MARV is far behind and a jump to the current month is refused. Close step by step.
Wrong target. The user entered a period that does not directly follow the current one, or a fiscal year change is involved and the next year's variant is not set up.
Blocking conditions. Open inventory counts, locked company codes or parallel processing can block the move; MMPV also checks that certain closing steps for the previous period, such as valuation runs, are complete in your process.
Testing in the wrong client or company code. Check that you are working on the right plant's company code, as MARV is kept per company code.
Safe correction
Treat MARV as a control table. Changing it directly is risky, and in most companies it needs finance sign-off. Prefer MMPV and OMSY over table edits, and document why the period was wrong.
Look at the posting pattern before you change anything, because users posting into a wrong period can create a lot of corrections later.

SAP Period End Closing Checklist
A month-end close checklist in a sensible order, with the SAP transactions to run for each step.
Common pitfalls
- !Jumping several months in one run instead of closing each period in sequence.
- !Closing the MM period before finance has finished valuation and reconciliation for the previous one.
- !Editing MARV directly in production without approval.
- !Forgetting to open MMRV allowed periods for the new year.
How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this
Period close questions are mostly about reading state across MARV, MMRV and FI. Netray's ERPray can run this kind of lookup in plain language against your own SAP system, read-only by default, showing the query it ran and respecting SAP authorizations, with the model served on your own hardware when the system is on-prem. It explains and finds the data; it does not replace configuration decisions or post documents without human approval.
Frequently asked questions
What does MMPV do in SAP?
MMPV closes the current material posting period for a company code and opens the next one by updating the period control record in MARV. It does not post accounting documents.
Can I close an MM period that is not the next one?
No. MMPV moves forward one period at a time. If several periods were not closed, run MMPV for each in sequence.
What is the difference between MMPV and MMRV?
MMPV changes the current period for MM; MMRV sets the allowed posting periods, including the previous and next period, so users can post in them.
Who should run MMPV?
Usually someone from finance or materials accounting, in coordination with inventory control, because it affects where all goods movements post for the whole company code.

SAP MIGO error M7 053: posting only possible in periods X and Y
M7 053 means the posting date of a goods movement is outside the two open material periods held in table MARV. Either use a posting date inside the allowed periods, or have inventory accounting open the right period with MMRV or advance it with MMPV. FI periods in OB52 are a separate check and can cause a different message.
Error fixSAP F5 060: Posting Only Possible in Periods X and Y
Message F5 060 fires when a document date falls in a fiscal period that the posting period variant has not opened for that account type. Either change the document/posting date into an open period, or have Finance open the required period and account type in OB52 for the relevant variant.
Error fixSAP M7 021: Deficit of SL Stock Quantity
M7 021 fires during a goods issue, delivery, or confirmation when SAP checks the unrestricted-use (SL) stock for the exact plant, storage location and batch combination and finds less than what you are trying to post out. Fix the entry (batch, storage location, quantity) first; only enable negative stock or downgrade the message to a warning if the business genuinely needs to post ahead of a receipt.
Error fixSAP IDoc Status 51: Application Document Not Posted
Status 51 tells you the IDoc reached the application layer and failed to post, but the status text itself is not the error - the real cause sits in the status record's long text or the linked application log. Fix the underlying data or configuration, then reprocess the IDoc through BD87 rather than editing the status.
Error fixSAP Short Dump TIME_OUT: Maximum Runtime Exceeded
A TIME_OUT runtime error means a dialog (or RFC) work process ran longer than the maximum allowed runtime, controlled by profile parameter rdisp/max_wprun_time (600 seconds by default). The fix is almost always to move the long-running work to background processing or tune the underlying program, not to raise the timeout.
How-toHow to Read MD04 Exception Messages in SAP
The exception indicator in MD04 flags procurement elements whose date or quantity no longer matches the current demand situation - it is SAP's built-in change signal, read element by element in the detail screen, not just the header icon. Triage by exception group first, then decide to reschedule, cancel, or accept each one.
