What Is Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Also known as: D365 Business Central, Business Central, Dynamics NAV successor

Definition

Dynamics 365 Business Central is Microsoft's cloud ERP for small and mid-sized businesses, the successor to Dynamics NAV. It covers finance, sales, purchasing, inventory and light manufacturing, and is extended with AL code, Power Platform and standard OData and API v2.0 endpoints.

Dynamics 365 Business Central Explained

Business Central grew from Navision and Dynamics NAV and runs as a Microsoft-hosted SaaS service, with an on-premises option still offered in some versions. It ships with General Ledger, Receivables, Payables, Inventory, Warehouse, Purchasing and a Manufacturing area with production BOMs, routings, work and machine centers, and production orders (planned, firm planned, released, finished).

Customization is by extensions written in AL, a language descended from C/AL, which replace direct code modification of the base app. Data is exposed through OData web services and the standard API v2.0, and the platform integrates with Power BI, Power Automate and Power Apps, plus Microsoft 365 and Copilot features.

Strengths are tight Microsoft integration and a large partner ecosystem. Limits appear in deep discrete manufacturing, complex scheduling, and regulated traceability, where customers add ISV solutions. Planning is run through the Planning Worksheet or Requisition Worksheet with MRP-style calculation.

Why It Matters

  • It is a frequent replacement target for legacy NAV and small ERPs, so many manufacturers evaluate it against NetSuite and Epicor.
  • The manufacturing area is lighter than specialist ERPs, so scope fit must be tested early.
  • AL extensions and AppSource apps shape upgrade effort, because the SaaS service updates on a regular cadence.
  • Standard APIs and OData make it relatively easy for outside AI agents to read data under user permissions.

In Practice

A 120-person fabricator replaces NAV 2016 with Business Central. They keep production BOMs and routings, run the Planning Worksheet nightly to generate firm planned production orders, and add an ISV for shop-floor capture. Customer-specific pricing code is rewritten as an AL extension instead of base-app changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Business Central the same as Dynamics NAV?

It is the successor. The functional lineage is NAV, but Business Central is delivered as a cloud service with AL extensions and a different upgrade model.

Does Business Central handle manufacturing?

Yes, with production BOMs, routings, work centers and production orders. Complex discrete or regulated manufacturers often add ISV solutions.

How do outside systems connect to it?

Through the standard API v2.0, OData web services, custom API pages written in AL, or Power Automate connectors.
