Africa Import Duty and Landed Cost Calculator for Manufacturers

African manufacturers often import machinery parts, resin, steel and components, and the invoice price is only part of what arrives at the plant. This calculator builds the full landed cost from FOB value, so costing, pricing and cash planning use the same number.

How to use the calculator

Start with the FOB value from the supplier invoice and add freight and insurance to reach CIF. Enter the duty rate for your tariff line, any additional levies, and the local VAT rate. Then add clearing and inland costs. The tool shows the cash needed at the border, which is higher than the inventory cost when import VAT is recoverable, and the landed cost per unit for costing.

  • Get the duty rate from the national tariff schedule.
  • Confirm whether your country values on CIF or another basis.
  • Switch the VAT option when VAT cannot be reclaimed.

The method

Customs value in most African customs administrations follows the WTO transaction value approach and is usually expressed on a CIF basis. Duty is a percentage of that value. Many countries then charge VAT on customs value plus duty plus other levies. Recoverable VAT is a timing cost, not a product cost, so it is excluded from landed cost for inventory. Clearing and inland transport are added as directly attributable costs.

Reading the result

Compare the uplift over FOB across suppliers and routes, not just unit price. A cheaper supplier with a higher duty line or longer inland haul can cost more once landed. Use the chart to see how a duty rate change, such as a preferential rate under a trade agreement, moves total cost. Feed the unit landed cost into your ERP item cost or purchase variance review.

  • Check preferential rates before assuming the general rate.
  • Include demurrage risk when cash planning.
  • Re-run when exchange rates move materially.

Common mistakes

Frequent errors are adding duty to FOB instead of CIF, ignoring levies that apply per country, treating recoverable VAT as cost, and forgetting that exchange rates used by customs may differ from the bank rate. Misclassifying the tariff line is the costliest mistake, since it changes the duty rate and can trigger post-clearance audit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CIF value and why does it matter?

CIF is cost, insurance and freight: the goods price plus international freight and insurance to the port of entry. Many customs administrations use it as the base for duty, so it drives the whole calculation.

Is import VAT part of landed cost?

Only when you cannot reclaim it. If import VAT is recoverable as input tax it affects cash flow but not inventory cost. The calculator lets you switch between the two treatments.

Where do I find the duty rate?

Use the tariff schedule of the importing country, found through its revenue authority or customs service, and the HS code of your product. Regional blocs and trade agreements may offer lower preferential rates.

Does this work for every African country?

The structure is common, but rates, valuation rules and levies differ. Treat it as a template, enter the local rates, and confirm details with a licensed customs broker.

Netray can add a landed cost view to your ERP so purchase orders show the expected duty and freight uplift before goods are received.
