Rand Weakness Margin Erosion Calculator for Manufacturers
A quote priced at one exchange rate and a purchase order placed at another is the classic way a South African manufacturer loses margin without a single mistake on the shop floor. This calculator quantifies it.

How to use it
Split your unit cost into the part that follows the dollar and the part that is rand-only. Enter the selling price, the rate used when you quoted and the rate you are paying now. The tool shows the new margin, the profit lost on the order, the break-even rate where the product stops making money and the price you would need to restore the original margin percentage.
- Be honest about what is dollar-linked: steel, resin and electronics usually are.
- Use the chart to find your pain threshold.
- Run it again for each long-validity quote.
The maths
Unit cost equals dollar cost times rate plus rand cost. Margin equals price minus cost divided by price. The break-even rate solves price equals cost for the rate, which gives price minus rand cost divided by dollar cost. The restoring price divides the new cost by one minus the original margin fraction, which keeps margin as a percentage of price rather than markup on cost, a distinction that regularly causes sales and finance to disagree.
Reading the result
A single rand move of ten percent on a product with half its cost linked to the dollar costs about five percent of cost, which on a 25 percent margin product is a fifth of the margin. If the restoring price is more than the customer will accept, consider forward cover on the dollar leg, shorter quote validity, or an exchange-rate adjustment clause tied to a published rate.
ERP notes
Standard costs updated once a year hide this effect until the variance report. Refresh the dollar-linked components at least quarterly and review price lists against the current rate. Where your ERP holds multiple currency rates, schedule the rate load and flag quotes older than the validity period.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as dollar-linked cost?
Anything bought in dollars or priced off a dollar benchmark, such as imported electronics, steel, aluminium and resins. Local suppliers often reprice with the rand, only with a delay, so treat their lines as partly linked.
Margin or markup?
This tool uses margin, which is profit divided by price. Markup is profit divided by cost and gives a bigger number. Mixing the two is a common reason a repricing target misses.
How does this differ from hedging?
The calculator shows exposure when unhedged. A forward contract fixes the rate for the dollar leg so margin stays near the quoted level, at the cost of the forward points and the lock-in if the rand strengthens.
Can I use it for other currencies?
Yes. Rename the idea mentally: any local price, any foreign-linked cost, any pair of rates. The formulas are currency neutral, only the labels and defaults are rand and dollar.
