Truckload Freight Cost per Pallet Calculator
A truckload costs the same whether it is full or not. This calculator shows the cost per pallet at your load size, tells you whether space or weight is the limit and compares the result with an LTL price for the same pallets.
Your numbers
Line haul, fuel surcharge and accessorials for the lane.
A 53 ft trailer typically holds 26 standard pallets in a single layer, depending on loading pattern.
Legal payload depends on tractor, trailer, axle weights and jurisdiction. Use your carrier's figure.
Your results
Planning figure only. Confirm trailer type, stackability, axle weight limits and accessorial charges with your carrier.
Cost per pallet vs pallets loaded
Sweeps Pallets you want to ship from 1 to 26, holding your other inputs fixed.
Spot consolidation from your orders
Optional: analyze open orders in your ERP to find shipments that could share a trailer.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use it
Enter the all-in truckload rate for the lane, the pallet positions in the trailer, how many pallets you plan to ship and their loaded weight. Set the payload limit from your carrier or your legal limit. The tool takes the lower of space and weight as the binding limit, then divides the rate by the pallets that actually fit. Add an LTL per pallet rate to see where a partial load makes sense.
- Use the real loaded weight including pallet and wrap
- Check whether pallets can be double stacked
- Include fuel and accessorials in the rate
- Enter the LTL quote for the same pallet dimensions
The method behind it
Pallets allowed by weight equal payload divided by weight per pallet, rounded down. The maximum pallets is the lesser of floor positions and the weight limit. Cost per pallet equals the truckload rate divided by pallets shipped. Fill is shipped pallets over positions. Cost per pound divides the rate by total weight, which is the common metric for dense freight. The chart sweeps pallets loaded to show how cost falls as the trailer fills.
Reading the result
At 1850 for the truck, 18 pallets cost about 103 each and 26 pallets about 71 each, unless weight caps you. With 1400 pound pallets and a 43,000 pound limit, 30 pallets by weight is not binding, but 1800 pound pallets would cap you at 23. If LTL for the same pallets is lower than the truckload rate, ship LTL or consolidate with other orders until the load fills.
Common mistakes
Assuming positions equals capacity ignores weight, which limits dense products first. Using a quote without fuel and detention understates cost. Comparing per pallet cost at 100 percent fill to a typical 70 percent fill gives the wrong picture of what you pay in practice.
- Ignoring payload limits for dense freight
- Leaving fuel and accessorials out of the rate
- Assuming perfect loading patterns
- Comparing at full fill when typical fill is lower
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pallets fit in a 53 foot trailer?
Typically 26 standard 48 by 40 inch pallets in a single layer when pinwheeled, or about 30 with some loading patterns for narrower pallets. Stackable freight can increase the count if height and weight allow.
How do I calculate freight cost per pallet?
Divide the total all-in rate by the number of pallets on the truck. Make sure that includes fuel surcharge and accessorials. For comparisons, also compute cost per pound, which suits dense freight better.
When is LTL cheaper than a truckload?
When the pallet count is low enough that the LTL charges for those pallets are below the truckload rate. The breakeven is the truckload rate divided by the LTL per pallet price, though LTL rates vary by weight and class.
Does weight or space limit my load?
Compare pallets allowed by weight to floor positions. The lower number is your limit. Dense items like metal parts hit weight first, while light packaged goods are usually space limited.
