Infor ION Scripting and ETL: Transformation Options Explained

Question
infor ion scripting

Also searched as

  • infor ion etl tool
  • infor ion data transformation
  • infor ion mapping functions

Short answer

ION is an integration and messaging layer, not a general ETL tool. Transformation happens in mappings inside document flows (field mapping, functions, conditions) and in Data Lake ingestion; for heavy or multi-source ETL you normally pair ION with a dedicated tool. Scripting capabilities depend on the ION component and version.

Applies to: Infor ION in Infor OS (cloud and on-premise). Capabilities of the mapper and scripting vary by version; confirm in the ION documentation.

How to approach transformation in ION

  1. 1Clarify the need: moving a business document between applications (ION Connect), loading data to the Data Lake, or heavy batch ETL. Each uses a different part of the platform.
  2. 2For application-to-application flows, open ION Desk and the Connect area, and build a document flow between connection points.
  3. 3Add a mapping between the source and target BOD or document and map fields one to one first.
  4. 4Use the mapper's functions and conditions for transformations such as concatenation, lookups or defaults, and use script steps only where your version supports them.
  5. 5Test with a real sample document through the monitor; compare the output with the target's expected schema.
  6. 6For analytics, send documents to the Data Lake and transform there or in the analytics layer rather than in the flow.
  7. 7For high-volume or complex joins, use a dedicated ETL tool and use ION only for event delivery.
  8. 8Version and document each mapping; changes in the ERP's BOD structure after an upgrade will break them.

Where logic lives in an ION flow

A document flow moves BODs (Business Object Documents) between connection points. The mapping between two document types is where you shape data: renaming, restructuring, computing values and filtering.

Keep mappings simple and push business rules into the source or target application where possible, because logic hidden in a mapping is hard to find during an upgrade.

ION versus a real ETL tool

ION is good at event-driven messaging with guaranteed delivery and monitoring. It is not designed for large set-based transformations, slowly changing dimensions or multi-gigabyte batch loads.

A realistic pattern is ION for operational integration and the Data Lake for landing data, with transformation in the analytics layer or in a tool such as an external ETL service for heavy lifting.

Calling out to code

When a mapping cannot express a rule, the usual alternatives are an API call through the ION API gateway to a small service you own, or a custom extension in the ERP. This keeps code testable and versioned outside the mapper.

Secure such calls with service accounts and the .ionapi credential, and log failures where operations staff will see them.

Common pitfalls

  • !Treating ION as a batch ETL engine and overloading flows with large payloads.
  • !Burying business rules in mappings with no documentation.
  • !Not retesting mappings after an ERP upgrade changes the BOD structure.
  • !Skipping the monitor: failed documents sit in error queues unnoticed.
  • !Embedding credentials in mappings or flows instead of using managed service accounts.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

An assistant can read your BOD definitions and mappings and explain, in plain language, what a flow does or why a document failed, which is slow to do by hand. Netray builds such assistants on private models next to your Infor environment so integration definitions stay in house. It does not replace your integration monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

Does Infor ION support scripting?

ION offers mapping functions and, depending on component and version, extension points. For complex logic most teams call a service through the ION API. Check your version's documentation for what the mapper supports.

Is ION an ETL tool?

Not in the classic sense. It is an integration and messaging platform. For bulk transformation use the Data Lake and analytics tooling or an external ETL tool.

Where do I see failed documents?

In the ION monitoring area, which lists documents and their status per flow and connection point, allowing you to inspect errors and resubmit.

Can I use ION on premise?

Yes, ION is available for on-premise Infor OS deployments, though features and update cadence differ from the cloud edition. Confirm with Infor.

How to Map and Transform a BOD in Infor ION Connect

In ION Desk you create a mapping between a source document and a target document, add it to a document flow between two connection points, and test it by sending a real or sample BOD. The mapping editor lets you assign fields, apply functions and lookups, and handle repeating structures, while the ION Monitor shows the result of each run.

Error fix

Diagnose and fix a failed BOD document flow in ION Desk

A Document Flow showing Failed in ION Desk means a BOD (Business Object Document) stopped either at schema validation, at the mapping step, or at the target application. Open the failed instance's detail to see the exact failing element, fix the source data or mapping, then use Resubmit rather than re-triggering the original transaction to avoid duplicates.

Error fix

Fix a 401 Unauthorized error from Infor ION API

A 401 from ION API almost always means the credentials in the .ionapi file no longer match what ION API Gateway expects - not that the password is simply wrong. Check whether the Authorized App or service account behind the file was revoked, regenerated, expired, or issued for a different tenant, then re-test with a direct OAuth2 client_credentials call before touching any calling code.

How-to

How to query Infor Data Lake with Compass SQL

Compass is the SQL query layer in Infor OS for querying Infor Data Lake, where flattened copies of BODs published over ION are stored by Noun and Verb. Open a Compass SQL Workbench tab, browse the schema for the correct table, and run a filtered SELECT rather than pulling the full history, since Data Lake tables can hold years of append-only data.

Error fix

Fix a Ming.le homepage widget that will not load

A blank or endlessly spinning Ming.le widget is usually a permissions, session, or backend availability problem, not a broken widget itself. Confirm the issue is widget-specific, check the user's Security Group access to the underlying app, and look at the widget's network calls in browser dev tools to see whether it is failing with 401/403 or simply timing out against a down service.

How-to

Connect a Birst Space to Infor Data Lake and build a report

Birst is Infor's embedded BI layer, and the recommended way to report on live Data Lake data is a Live Access source inside a Birst Space rather than a static upload. Build the logical model over a filtered set of tables, apply row-level security, and publish the dashboard to a Ming.le homepage so users reach it without leaving Infor OS.
