Infor WMS with Infor SyteLine: using an external warehouse application

SyteLine documentation describes an external warehouse application that can be integrated in place of SyteLine's native inventory handling, and Infor WMS is that kind of application. The integration runs through ION using BODs. It makes sense for multi-site or high-volume warehouses, but it adds a second system of record for stock that you must keep reconciled.

How Infor WMS (Warehouse Management) connects to Infor CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine)

ION BOD integration (documented 'Using an External Warehouse Application')

SyteLine publishes and consumes business object documents through ION, so orders, receipts and inventory changes are exchanged with the warehouse application. In practice you configure the SyteLine side for external warehouse mode and map BODs in ION. Check the Infor documentation for your release for the exact documents.

Ownership of inventory transactions

Once warehouse processes are external, the warehouse application owns picks, putaway and moves, and SyteLine receives the results. Decide clearly which system owns each location and transaction to avoid double posting.

Setting it up

  1. 1Decide whether you need a WMSQuantify the problem: multiple warehouses, large volumes, wave picking or complex putaway. If native SyteLine inventory handles it, stop here.
  2. 2Define system ownershipList which warehouses, locations and transaction types are handled by WMS and which remain in SyteLine.
  3. 3Review the SyteLine external warehouse documentationRead the section on using an external warehouse application for your release and configure SyteLine accordingly in a test company.
  4. 4Configure ION and map BODsSet up connection points, document flows and any mapping or transformation for items, units of measure, locations and lots.
  5. 5Load master dataAlign item, UoM, lot and location master data between both systems before initial inventory load.
  6. 6Test inbound, outbound and adjustmentsRun receipts, partial picks, shorts, returns, lot and serial items and cycle count adjustments end to end.
  7. 7Cut over with a reconciliation routineTake an inventory snapshot, go live per warehouse, and reconcile on-hand between the two systems daily at first.

What usually breaks

  • !Both systems allowed to post the same inventory transactions, producing double movements.
  • !BOD errors left in ION queues so SyteLine and WMS quantities drift apart unnoticed.
  • !Unit of measure and lot mappings that differ between systems.
  • !Location structures that do not translate to SyteLine warehouses and locations.
  • !Release and patch levels of SyteLine, ION and WMS upgraded out of sync.
  • !No daily on-hand reconciliation, so errors surface only at the physical count.

A private AI layer across both systems

On-hand reconciliation between WMS and SyteLine

An assistant reading both stock records can list items and locations whose quantities differ, and trace likely stuck BODs or missed transactions, for an analyst to resolve.

ION error triage

Group failed BODs by cause, such as missing items or invalid locations, and draft the master data fix for approval.

Plain-language warehouse questions

Ask which orders are blocked on shorts, or where a lot is, with answers drawn from WMS and SyteLine together.

When something else fits better

  • SyteLine native inventory with RF scanning is often enough for one or two warehouses.
  • A third-party barcode or WMS suite built for SyteLine, such as Nutech Viewpoint, may be a lighter option.
  • If you have simple storage but need accuracy, tighter cycle counting may fix more than a new system.

Frequently asked questions

How does Infor WMS connect to SyteLine?

Infor documents using an external warehouse application with SyteLine and integrates through ION BODs. You configure SyteLine for external warehouse processing and map the documents in ION. Check the documentation for your exact release.

Does WMS replace SyteLine inventory?

It replaces native warehouse handling for the locations you assign to it, but SyteLine still holds inventory records and costing. That is why reconciliation between the two matters.

Does this work on-prem?

ION and SyteLine both support on-prem deployments, but hosting options depend on your products and releases. Confirm licensing and supported topologies with Infor before design.

Where can AI help?

In reconciliation, BOD error triage and plain-language questions across both systems. We would keep any write-back to inventory or master data behind human approval.
