Odoo Manufacturing App: How to Make a Kit
odoo manufacturing app make kit

Short answer
In Odoo you make a kit by creating a Bill of Materials and setting BoM Type to Kit instead of Manufacture this product. A kit is not produced: when you sell or deliver it, Odoo replaces the kit product with its components on the stock moves. Use a kit for bundles you pack at delivery, and a manufactured BOM when you need to build and stock the assembled item.
Applies to: Odoo 14 to 19 with Manufacturing and Inventory installed. Kit behaviour is the same in Community and Enterprise.
How to configure a kit BOM
- 1Install Manufacturing (the Kit BoM type needs the MRP module).
- 2Create the kit product in Inventory or Sales > Products, and the component products it contains.
- 3Go to Manufacturing > Products > Bills of Materials and click New.
- 4Select the kit product, set BoM Type to Kit, and add each component with its quantity.
- 5Save. Sell the kit on a sales order as usual.
- 6Confirm the order and open the delivery: the stock moves list the components, not the kit product.
- 7Validate the delivery; the components leave stock, and no manufacturing order is created.
- 8Check availability on the kit product form: the on-hand quantity is computed from the component stock.
How a kit differs from a manufactured product
A manufactured BOM produces stock. An MO consumes components and creates a quantity of the finished product that sits in a warehouse until sold. A kit BOM never produces stock. The kit product only exists as a sales line, and Odoo explodes it into component moves when the delivery is created.
This is why kits suit bundles such as a starter pack of three items sold together: nothing is assembled, there is no labor, and the inventory is tracked entirely at component level. The kit quantity shown on the product is derived, typically the number of complete kits the component stock could supply.
When to use Kit and when to use Manufacture
Choose Kit when the bundle is packed at shipping time, you do not need to stock it as a unit and you do not need cost, serial or lot tracking on the assembled product. Choose Manufacture this product when the item is assembled, needs work orders, has its own serial or lot number, or must be held as finished stock.
A kit can also be a component of a manufactured BOM, in which case the MO consumes the kit's components. Be careful with nested kits and with the cost of the kit, since the kit product itself holds no valuation; costs follow the components on sale.

Common pitfalls
- !Expecting a manufacturing order from a kit; none is ever created.
- !Combining Kit with Replenish on Order and Manufacture routes on the kit product, and then looking for the MO.
- !Assuming a kit can carry its own lot or serial number; tracking applies to the components.
- !Setting a sale price on the kit without checking component cost, so margin reports look wrong.
- !Creating several BOMs for the same product with different types and getting an unexpected one picked.
How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this
A grounded assistant on your Odoo database can list which products have kit BOMs, which components are limiting the number of kits you can ship, and which kits carry a wrong BoM type. Odoo's own forms handle the setup itself; AI mainly helps when you have hundreds of bundles to audit. Where Odoo runs on your own infrastructure, the model can be hosted on the same network, so BOM and stock data stay local.
Frequently asked questions
What is a kit BOM in Odoo?
A kit BOM is a Bill of Materials with BoM Type set to Kit. It describes a bundle that is not manufactured: when sold or delivered, Odoo swaps the kit for its components in the stock moves, so only the components leave inventory.
Does Odoo create a manufacturing order for a kit?
No. Only a BOM of type Manufacture this product creates manufacturing orders. A kit is exploded on the delivery. If you need an MO, assembly steps, or finished stock, change the BoM Type.
How does Odoo calculate kit stock?
The kit quantity is computed from the component quantities and the BOM, as the number of complete kits that could be supplied. The kit itself holds no stock, so you cannot receive or adjust it directly.
Can I change a kit into a manufactured product?
Yes, edit the BOM and change BoM Type to Manufacture this product. Existing open sales orders and deliveries may already have exploded moves, so test with new orders and check open documents first.

Odoo Manufacturing Tutorial: From BOM to Finished Product
The Odoo Manufacturing app (MRP) turns a Bill of Materials into manufacturing orders that consume components and produce finished goods. The core flow is: create products, build a BOM, optionally add work centers and operations, create and confirm a manufacturing order, then produce and mark it done. This walkthrough covers the process end to end and what to verify on Odoo 19.
How-toOdoo: Create a Manufacturing Order from a Sales Order
To make confirming an Odoo sales order create a manufacturing order, give the product a Bill of Materials of type Manufacture this product and set both the Manufacture and Replenish on Order (MTO) routes on the product. When the order is confirmed, the delivery demand triggers a procurement, the Manufacture rule fires, and an MO is created with the sales order as its source.
Error fixOdoo Manufacturing Order: Components Not Available or Will Not Reserve
An Odoo manufacturing order stays in Confirmed with components marked Not Available when stock.move lines for the raw materials cannot be reserved from the quantity actually sitting in the MO's source location. The usual causes are stock in the wrong location, stock already reserved by another document, lot or tracking mismatches, and a unit of measure difference between the BoM and the product.

Generic Inquiries (GI) are Acumatica's no-code query builder for joining tables, adding filters, and exposing the result as an inquiry screen, dashboard data source, or API endpoint. Error fixFix Odoo AccessError: You Are Not Allowed to Access Records
Odoo raises AccessError when a user's security groups do not grant a CRUD right on a model through ir.model.access.csv, or when an ir.rule record rule filters the specific record out for that user or company. Fix it by adding the user to the group named in the error, editing the model's access rights, or reviewing the record rule's domain under Settings > Technical > Security.

A check that already cleared in Bank Reconciliation or falls in a closed period needs an extra step before it can be voided cleanly.
