Odoo Work Center Capacity Calculator

Odoo work centers carry a handful of parameters that shape the schedule: capacity per cycle, time efficiency, OEE target, setup time and cleanup time. This calculator applies the same ideas to a weekly view so you can see whether demand fits before you build the plan.

Share of calendar time expected to be productive after breaks, breakdowns and losses.

Capacity and OEE reporting

How to use the calculator

Enter the work center calendar first: hours per shift, shifts and working days. Then enter your OEE target as the realistic share of that time that is productive. Add the standard cycle time for one batch, the units per batch, and the setup and cleanup minutes spent per batch. Finally, enter weekly demand. The calculator returns maximum weekly output, batches needed and utilization. Change batch size to see how setup amortisation raises capacity.

  • Use measured cycle times from a time study if you have them.
  • Set OEE from history, not from the equipment brochure.
  • Run separate cases for each product family with different setups.

The method

Usable minutes equal calendar minutes times OEE. Batch minutes equal setup plus cleanup plus cycle time divided by time efficiency. Max units per week is the number of whole batches that fit in usable minutes times units per batch. Load is batches needed for demand times batch minutes, and utilization is load over usable minutes. A time efficiency of 100 means the machine runs at the standard time, while 80 means batches take 25 percent longer than the standard.

Worked example

A single shift of 8 hours, 5 days gives 2,400 calendar minutes; at 80 percent OEE, 1,920 are usable. A batch of 10 units takes 10 setup plus 5 cleanup plus 6 cycle, 21 minutes. That fits 91 batches, or 910 units per week. Demand of 1,500 needs 150 batches and 3,150 minutes, so utilization is about 164 percent. The plant needs a second shift, bigger batches, or reduced setup. The chart shows larger batches help, but with diminishing returns.

Common mistakes

Double counting losses is frequent: if OEE already includes setup and changeover, adding setup minutes again understates capacity. Use an OEE that excludes planned setup, or set setup to zero. Another mistake is planning to 100 percent utilization, which leaves no room for rush orders or breakdowns. Many planners target 80 to 90 percent on constrained machines. Finally, remember that Odoo schedules by work order, so very long operations may split across days.

  • Keep OEE and time efficiency distinct in your thinking.
  • Revisit parameters after the first month of real work order times.
  • Check the work center calendar for holidays and maintenance windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is time efficiency on an Odoo work center?

It is a percentage factor applied to planned durations. At 100 percent, operations take the standard time. Below 100, they take longer, and above 100 shorter. It lets you adjust scheduling for a slower or faster machine without editing every routing.

What does capacity mean on a work center?

It is the number of units the work center can process in one cycle, for example a tray or an oven load. Larger batches spread setup and cleanup across more units, which is why capacity strongly affects weekly output.

How is OEE target used?

It represents expected productive time as a share of calendar time and is used for reporting and planning. Treat it as a realistic estimate drawn from past performance, since an optimistic figure produces schedules that are missed.

Why is utilization above 100 percent?

Because demand needs more time than the work center has. Options include adding shifts, increasing batch size, cutting setup time, using an alternative work center or moving the demand to later weeks.

If you want actual work order data from your ERP turned into capacity and OEE reports, Netray can connect that analysis to your system.
