Short answer

The Odoo Manufacturing app (MRP) turns a Bill of Materials into manufacturing orders that consume components and produce finished goods. The core flow is: create products, build a BOM, optionally add work centers and operations, create and confirm a manufacturing order, then produce and mark it done. This walkthrough covers the process end to end and what to verify on Odoo 19.

Applies to: Odoo 16 to 19, Community and Enterprise. Work orders, planning and shop floor views need extra settings; some views are Enterprise only.

Odoo manufacturing process, step by step

  1. 1Install the Manufacturing app. It depends on Inventory, which handles stock moves and valuation. Add Purchase if you buy the components.
  2. 2Create the components and the finished product in Inventory > Products. Set units of measure and, if needed, lot or serial tracking.
  3. 3Create a Bill of Materials under Manufacturing > Products > Bills of Materials. Select the finished product, set the quantity it yields, and list the components with quantities.
  4. 4For routing, enable Work Orders in Manufacturing > Configuration > Settings, create work centers, then add operations to the BOM with a work center and expected duration.
  5. 5Create a manufacturing order from Manufacturing > Operations > Manufacturing Orders. Pick the product; the BOM loads the components and work orders.
  6. 6Confirm the MO. Odoo reserves components from stock; use Check Availability if some are short and look at the Components tab.
  7. 7Record production: start work orders if you use them, set the produced quantity, and press Mark as Done. Odoo consumes components and puts finished goods in stock.
  8. 8Review the result in Inventory moves and, with Accounting, in the stock valuation report.

The pieces: BOM, work center, operation, MO

The Bill of Materials is the recipe. It holds the finished product, the yield, the components with quantities, and optionally operations. A BOM of type Manufacture this product creates MOs; a Kit BOM does not. BOMs can be multi-level, so a sub-assembly with its own BOM is made by its own MO.

A work center is a machine or station with a capacity and a working calendar. An operation links a work center to a BOM with an expected time. When an MO is confirmed, each operation becomes a work order, which gives you scheduling, time tracking and per-operation costs. A small shop can skip work centers entirely and use plain MOs that only consume components.

The manufacturing order is the instruction to make a quantity. Its status moves through draft, confirmed, in progress, to produce and done, and it can be cancelled before completion.

What a small manufacturer typically adds next

Once the basic flow works, most shops add make to order so sales orders raise MOs automatically, reordering rules to build for stock, scrap handling, by-products, and lot or serial traceability. Planning views, shop floor tablets and quality checks exist, but several of these are Enterprise features, so check your edition before designing around them.

Cost tracking depends on the product costing method and on whether work centers carry a cost per hour. Without a cost per hour on work centers, the cost of a finished product includes components only.

Odoo 19 and version differences

The overall MO and BOM flow is stable across recent releases, but menu names, product type fields (for example, how goods are marked as tracking inventory) and Enterprise planning screens change between versions. Before following any screenshot-based tutorial, check which version it was recorded on and read the release notes for the version you run.

For a demo, you can start a free trial database on Odoo's site, install Manufacturing and load demo data, which creates sample products, BOMs and MOs so you can click through the whole cycle before committing your real catalog.

Manufacturing > Products > Bills of Materials > New
  Product: Finished product
  BoM Type: Manufacture this product
  Components: add lines with quantity
Operations: work center + duration (needs Work Orders setting)

Common pitfalls

  • !Starting with work centers and routings before the plain BOM to MO flow works.
  • !Entering wrong units of measure on components, which gives absurd consumption quantities.
  • !Forgetting to enable Work Orders in settings, then wondering why operations do not appear on the MO.
  • !Loading a large catalog before testing costing, then finding finished goods valued without labor.
  • !Assuming Enterprise-only planning or shop floor features exist in Community.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

Once your BOMs and MOs are in Odoo, an assistant grounded in that data (ERPray, read-only by default and showing its query) can answer questions such as which MOs are late, which BOMs have no components, or what a product cost is made of. For companies running Odoo on-premises, the model can run on local GPUs so production data stays inside the network. For learning the app itself, Odoo's own documentation and a trial database are the right tools; AI helps once there is data worth asking about.

Frequently asked questions

Is Odoo Manufacturing suitable for a small manufacturer?

Often yes for simple to medium discrete or process work: BOMs, MOs, work centers, purchasing and inventory in one system. Check limits for finite scheduling, deep traceability and regulated industries before committing, and run a pilot with real products.

Do I need work centers to use Odoo Manufacturing?

No. A manufacturing order with only components works without work centers. Add work centers and operations when you want routing, scheduling, time tracking and labor or machine costs per operation.

What is the difference between a BOM and a manufacturing order?

The BOM is the reusable recipe: components, yield and operations. The manufacturing order is a single instruction to make a quantity now, which consumes the components and creates finished stock. Many MOs can use one BOM.

Can I try Odoo manufacturing before buying?

Yes. Odoo offers trial databases where you can install the Manufacturing app and load demo data. It is best to test with a few of your real BOMs afterwards, because demo data hides the messy parts.

Odoo: Create a Manufacturing Order from a Sales Order

To make confirming an Odoo sales order create a manufacturing order, give the product a Bill of Materials of type Manufacture this product and set both the Manufacture and Replenish on Order (MTO) routes on the product. When the order is confirmed, the delivery demand triggers a procurement, the Manufacture rule fires, and an MO is created with the sales order as its source.

How-to

Odoo Manufacturing App: How to Make a Kit

In Odoo you make a kit by creating a Bill of Materials and setting BoM Type to Kit instead of Manufacture this product. A kit is not produced: when you sell or deliver it, Odoo replaces the kit product with its components on the stock moves. Use a kit for bundles you pack at delivery, and a manufactured BOM when you need to build and stock the assembled item.

Error fix

Odoo Manufacturing Order: Components Not Available or Will Not Reserve

An Odoo manufacturing order stays in Confirmed with components marked Not Available when stock.move lines for the raw materials cannot be reserved from the quantity actually sitting in the MO's source location. The usual causes are stock in the wrong location, stock already reserved by another document, lot or tracking mismatches, and a unit of measure difference between the BoM and the product.

How-to

Odoo Inventory Valuation Report Does Not Match the Balance Sheet

In Odoo with automated inventory valuation, the stock valuation report should equal the balance of the stock valuation account. Differences nearly always come from manual journal entries to that account, products with manual valuation, costing method changes, landed costs, negative stock, or vendor bills posted at a different price than the receipt.

How to Create a Generic Inquiry in Acumatica

Generic Inquiries (GI) are Acumatica's no-code query builder for joining tables, adding filters, and exposing the result as an inquiry screen, dashboard data source, or API endpoint. Open System > Customization > Generic Inquiry, add your base table, define joins and conditions, then run and save. No SQL or customization project is required.

Fix Odoo AccessError: You Are Not Allowed to Access Records

Odoo raises AccessError when a user's security groups do not grant a CRUD right on a model through ir.model.access.csv, or when an ir.rule record rule filters the specific record out for that user or company. Fix it by adding the user to the group named in the error, editing the model's access rights, or reviewing the record rule's domain under Settings > Technical > Security.
