Short answer
Most SAP MM errors fall in five places: purchasing document creation and release (ME21N), goods movements (MIGO), period control, invoice verification (MIRO) and account determination. This page lists the ones that come up most, what causes each, and the first fix, with links to detailed pages for the biggest ones.
Applies to: SAP ECC 6.0 and S/4HANA on-premise MM-PUR, MM-IM and MM-IV.
How to troubleshoot any SAP MM error
- 1Read the full message, including the long text (double click the message or press F1 on it). The message class and number (for example M7 021) tell you the area.
- 2Note the transaction, plant, material, movement type and posting date you used. Most MM errors depend on one of these.
- 3Check stock or document status: MMBE for stock, MB52 for stock by storage location, ME23N for the PO, MB03 for a material document.
- 4Check the period and company code settings (MMPV, OB52) if the message mentions posting date or period.
- 5If the message is about accounts, look at automatic account determination in OBYC and the valuation class on the material.
- 6If it is a block, find who or what set it: release status, invoice block reason, delivery block or a material status.
- 7Fix the master data or configuration cause, not just the single document, or the same error returns tomorrow.
Goods movement errors (MIGO)
M7 021 'deficit of stock' means a goods issue would take stock negative for the material, plant, storage location or batch you chose. Check stock in MB52 for the exact level, the batch and special stock. Our detailed page covers it: sap-m7-021-deficit-of-stock-error.
M7 053 'posting only possible in periods X and Y' means the posting date falls outside the open MM periods. Open the period with MMPV or change the posting date. See sap-migo-m7-053-posting-only-possible-in-periods and the period closing page.
Another very common class is 'material not maintained in plant' or 'storage location not maintained': the material master lacks the plant or storage view. Extend it with MM01 or MM02 (create the missing views) and try again.
Purchasing document errors (ME21N, ME28, ME29N)
A PO that cannot be ordered or printed often sits in a release strategy. Check the Release strategy tab in ME23N. If the strategy was not determined at all, see sap-me21n-release-strategy-not-determined-po-not-blocked; if the strategy exists but nobody can release it, see release-strategy-in-sap-mm-not-working.
Pricing errors such as no price found show up as a net price of zero or a missing condition. Create the info record (ME11) or a condition record (MEK1) for the vendor, material and purchasing organization, then reprice the PO item.
Account assignment errors (cost center locked, asset not found, WBS closed) are raised from FI/CO and need to be fixed in the master data of that account object, not in the PO.
Invoice verification and account determination (MIRO, OBYC)
An invoice posted with a price or quantity variance can be blocked for payment. Use MRBR to release it after review. Details: sap-miro-invoice-blocked-price-variance-mrbr-release. If the GR/IR account fills up with unmatched amounts, use MR11 and MB5S: sap-miro-grir-clearing-account-mr11-mb5s-how-to.
'Account not determined' errors on any posting come from OBYC (automatic postings for BSX, WRX, GBB, PRD and other keys). The key is built from the chart of accounts, valuation grouping, valuation class and movement type. Compare the material's valuation class (MM03 Accounting 1) to the OBYC entry, and add the missing combination with the finance team.
Posting period closed in FI instead of MM is a separate case: see sap-f5-posting-period-closed-error.

Common pitfalls
- !Fixing one document instead of the master data or configuration, so the same error returns.
- !Changing OBYC in production without finance sign off; the change affects every posting for that key.
- !Opening MM periods without checking that finance expects postings in the old period.
- !Releasing blocked invoices without checking the price variance cause.
- !Searching only for the message text instead of the message class and number, which stay constant across languages and releases.
How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this
Triage is where time disappears: a user posts a goods issue, gets a message, and a key user has to find the stock, period and account facts. An assistant grounded in SAP data (ERPray, read-only, role-aware, can run on-prem) can pull stock by plant and storage location, open periods, the PO release status and the valuation class from the actual tables and show the query. Changes in OBYC, MMPV or release strategies stay with your team.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common SAP MM errors?
Deficit of stock on goods issue (M7 021), posting period not open (M7 053), release strategy problems in purchasing, material not maintained in plant, invoice blocked for price or quantity variance and account determination missing in OBYC.
How do I find the long text of an SAP error message?
Double click the message in the status bar or open the message log and press F1. You can also look the message up in SE91 by class and number to read its text and where it is used.
Where can I download an SAP MM errors PDF?
SAP does not publish one official list. The reliable source is SE91, which shows every message and its long text for your release. Community blogs help, but check the text on your system.
Why does SAP show an error for a posting that worked yesterday?
Usually the period moved, stock changed, a block or release status changed, or a master data setting was edited. Compare yesterday's document to today's data before assuming a system fault.

SAP M7 021: Deficit of SL Stock Quantity
M7 021 fires during a goods issue, delivery, or confirmation when SAP checks the unrestricted-use (SL) stock for the exact plant, storage location and batch combination and finds less than what you are trying to post out. Fix the entry (batch, storage location, quantity) first; only enable negative stock or downgrade the message to a warning if the business genuinely needs to post ahead of a receipt.
Error fixSAP MIGO error M7 053: posting only possible in periods X and Y
M7 053 means the posting date of a goods movement is outside the two open material periods held in table MARV. Either use a posting date inside the allowed periods, or have inventory accounting open the right period with MMRV or advance it with MMPV. FI periods in OB52 are a separate check and can cause a different message.
How-toSAP ME21N: why the release strategy is not determined on a purchase order
When a purchase order saves without a release strategy, no strategy in the release group matched the PO's characteristic values. Compare the PO header values (value, document type, purchasing group, plant) against the value ranges in the strategy classification (CL24N), and check that the release group and code are active for the PO document type.
Error fixSAP MM Error Messages List: Reading Codes and Changing Message Severity
SAP messages are identified by class and number, for example M7 021 or ME 172. No official complete list fits every release, so the reliable method is SE91: enter the class and number to get the exact text, long text and where used. The class prefix tells you the area (M7 inventory management, M8 invoice verification, ME and MEPO purchasing), and many messages can be downgraded from error to warning in customizing.
How-toSAP MMPV Period Closing Error: Opening and Closing MM Periods
MM keeps its own posting period, separate from FI. MMPV (Close Period for Materials Management) moves the current MM period forward one month, MMRV allows posting back into the previous period, and OMSY initializes periods once at setup. The control values are stored in table MARV, one row per company code. Most MMPV errors mean the periods are not in the state the program expects or open work blocks closing.
Error fixSAP IDoc Status 51: Application Document Not Posted
Status 51 tells you the IDoc reached the application layer and failed to post, but the status text itself is not the error - the real cause sits in the status record's long text or the linked application log. Fix the underlying data or configuration, then reprocess the IDoc through BD87 rather than editing the status.
