What Is SAP MD04 (Stock/Requirements List)?
Also known as: MD04, SAP stock requirements list, MD05 MRP list, SAP MD01 MRP run
Definition
MD04 is the SAP Stock/Requirements List, a live view of a material's current stock, all supply and demand elements by date, and the projected available quantity. Planners use it to see why MRP created or suggested an order.
SAP MD04 (Stock/Requirements List) Explained
MD04 reads the current planning situation for one material in one plant, including receipts and issues that have not been through an MRP run yet. MD05 is the MRP list, a snapshot saved at the last planning run, so MD04 is the live view and MD05 is the historical one. The list starts with current unrestricted stock and then walks forward by date.
Each row is an MRP element. Supply elements include PurRqs (purchase requisition), PO item, PldOrd (planned order), PrdOrd (production order) and shipping notifications. Demand elements include SalesOrd, Reservation, dependent requirements (DepReq) from parent BOMs and forecast or independent requirements (IndReq). The running column is the projected available quantity per date.
Planning is executed with MD01 (total planning for a plant), MD02 (multi-level for one material) or MD03 (single item, single level). MRP applies the material master settings (MRP type, lot size, safety stock, planning time fence, lead times) and creates planned orders or requisitions. Exception messages such as 10 (reschedule in), 15 (reschedule out), 20 (cancel) and 96 (shortage) are surfaced in MD04 and in MD06 and MD07 collective views.
In S/4HANA, MRP Live runs in the database and Fiori apps such as Monitor Material Coverage and Manage Material Coverage complement MD04. The classic list is still widely used by planners to trace pegging, check dates and convert planned orders into purchase orders or production orders directly from the list.
Why It Matters
- It is the quickest place to explain why a shortage exists, which order is late and what MRP recommends.
- Exception messages direct planners to the few materials that need action out of thousands.
- Converting planned orders to POs or production orders from the list closes the loop between planning and execution.
- The list is the input that natural language planning assistants most often need to read and explain.
In Practice
A planner opens MD04 for a motor housing. Stock is 40. A sales order for 100 is due on the 12th and a production order of 80 is due on the 15th. The projected available quantity goes to minus 60 on the 12th, and exception 10 asks to reschedule the production order in. The planner pulls it forward or expedites castings to remove the shortage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between MD04 and MD05?
MD04 shows the live stock and requirements situation including changes since the last run. MD05 shows the MRP list saved at the time of the last planning run.
What do MD01, MD02 and MD03 do?
MD01 plans all materials in a plant, MD02 plans one material and its lower levels, and MD03 plans a single material at one level without exploding the BOM.
What is MRP Live?
MRP Live is the S/4HANA implementation of MRP that runs in the HANA database, replacing most of the classic ABAP processing for far faster runs on large item counts.
Related Terms
MRP (Material Requirements Planning)
MRP (Material Requirements Planning) is the ERP calculation that explodes demand through bills of materials, nets it against on-hand and on-order inventory, and offsets by lead time to produce timed purchase and work order suggestions.
Planned Order
A planned order is a system-generated supply proposal that MRP creates to cover a net requirement. It has a quantity and dates but is not yet a committed job, production order or purchase order, and MRP can delete or reschedule it on every run.
Pegging
Pegging links each supply order in MRP to the demand that created it, such as a sales order, forecast or parent job. It lets planners trace a component shortage up to the affected customer order and understand why an order exists.
MRP Action Messages
MRP action messages are exception prompts generated by the planning run, telling planners to release, reschedule in, reschedule out, change quantity or cancel existing orders so supply matches current demand.
Planning Time Fence
A planning time fence is a number of days from today inside which MRP will not automatically create or change planned supply. Changes in that window need planner approval, which keeps near-term production stable while the outer horizon remains flexible.
