SAP MRP Types (PD, ND, VB, VM, VV) and MD01 Run Parameters Explained
The MRP type on the material master and the parameters on the MD01 start screen decide what the planning run does. This reference lists the common MRP types and run settings with a short note on how each behaves.
| Group | Code | Meaning | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
MRP type | PD | MRP (deterministic planning) | Standard type for planned components and finished goods; uses requirements from BOM explosion and orders. |
MRP type | ND | No planning | Material is excluded from MRP; common for bulk consumables and non-stock items. |
MRP type | VB | Manual reorder point planning | Planner sets the reorder point; planning triggers when stock falls below it. |
MRP type | VM | Automatic reorder point planning | Reorder point is calculated by the system from forecast and lead time. |
MRP type | V1 | Manual reorder point with external requirements | Reorder point logic plus dependent and sales requirements. |
MRP type | V2 | Automatic reorder point with external requirements | Automatic reorder point plus external requirements. |
MRP type | VV | Forecast-based planning | Uses the consumption forecast to create planning requirements. |
MRP type | M0 | Master production scheduling (MPS) | Planning limited to MPS items, usually top-level or key components. |
Processing key | NETCH | Net change planning | Plans only materials with changes since the last run; the normal daily setting. |
Processing key | NETPL | Net change planning in planning horizon | Net change limited to materials with changes inside the planning horizon. |
Processing key | NEUPL | Regenerative planning | Replans all materials; heavy, so use outside production hours. |
Creation indicator: purchase requisitions | 1 | Purchase requisitions | MRP creates purchase requisitions for externally procured items. |
Creation indicator: purchase requisitions | 2 | Schedule lines | Used where scheduling agreements exist for the source; verify F1 help in MD01. |
Creation indicator: purchase requisitions | 3 | Schedule lines in opening period, otherwise requisitions | Hybrid setting; verify F1 help in MD01 for your release. |
Creation indicator: MRP list | 1 | Create MRP list | A list is saved for every planned material. |
Creation indicator: MRP list | 2 | MRP list depending on exception messages | List only saved where exceptions occurred. |
Creation indicator: MRP list | 3 | No MRP list | Faster run, but MD05 shows nothing for this run. |
Planning mode | 1 | Adapt planning data (normal mode) | Keeps firmed and manually changed elements, adapts the rest. |
Planning mode | 2 | Replan unchanged components | Replans components that did not change as well. |
Planning mode | 3 | Delete and recreate planning data | Deletes unfirmed planning data and rebuilds; use sparingly. |
Scheduling indicator | 1 | Basic dates for planned orders | Planned order dates from in-house production time or lead time. |
Scheduling indicator | 2 | Lead time scheduling and capacity planning | Uses routing to schedule and create capacity requirements. |
MRP type and run parameter behaviour depends on release and on Customizing. Master data rows apply per plant and material. Treat the notes as orientation and confirm settings in OMI2 (MRP types) and the F1 help in MD01.

How to read the table
The Group column separates master data (MRP type) from run time settings (processing key, creation indicators, planning mode, scheduling). Search by code or by words such as 'forecast' or 'regenerative'. Use the table when onboarding planners, when reviewing why a material was not planned, or when documenting your standard run variant.
Choosing MRP types
PD is right for anything that has a bill of material demand or sales demand you want planned precisely. Reorder point types (VB, VM) suit low-value, high-volume stock where lead time is short and consumption is steady. VV uses the forecast, so it needs a working forecast model in MM and sensible parameters. ND is correct for items you do not want planned at all, but check that nothing depends on them in a BOM before switching.
- A material set to ND will never create planned orders, even if a requirement exists.
- Reorder point types ignore BOM explosion unless the V1 or V2 variants are used.
- Mixing PD for components and VB for assemblies often causes shortages.
Typical run settings and mistakes
A normal daily run uses NETCH, planning mode 1, purchase requisitions, MRP lists created depending on exceptions and basic or lead time scheduling as your process requires. Running NEUPL in working hours can lock materials and slow other users. Using planning mode 3 deletes unfirmed planning data, so confirm that planned orders have been firmed when they should be before using it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PD and VV?
PD plans from actual requirements: sales orders, forecast requirements you entered, dependent requirements and stock. VV is forecast-based: it consumes the consumption forecast from past usage and plans from that. PD suits assembled products; VV suits stable consumables with history.
When should I use regenerative planning (NEUPL)?
Use it rarely: after major master data changes, a Customizing change, a data fix or when net change leaves obvious gaps. It replans every material in scope, so it should run outside working hours and in a controlled window.
Why does MD05 show nothing after my run?
If the MRP list creation indicator was set to 3 (no MRP list), no list is saved. Also with indicator 2 a list is only saved when exception messages exist. MD04 always shows live data and does not depend on the saved list.
Where is the MRP type maintained?
The MRP type is maintained on the MRP 1 view of the material master (MM01, MM02). The list of valid MRP types and their control parameters is in Customizing, in the MRP configuration for material master data.
