SAP MD04 Exception Messages and MRP Elements Reference
MD04 is where every SAP planner lives. Each line is an MRP element with its own abbreviation, and the exception messages tell you what MRP thinks needs action. This reference explains the common abbreviations, the exceptions 10, 15, 20 and 96, and the transactions to use next.
| Code | Kind | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
10 | Exception | Reschedule in | Receipt is scheduled later than needed. Ask supplier or shop to pull in, or accept the shortage. |
15 | Exception | Reschedule out | Receipt arrives earlier than needed. Push out to reduce stock holding, if cost and schedule allow. |
20 | Exception | Cancel process | No requirement covers the receipt. Cancel the order, PO line or requisition, after checking for hidden demand. |
96 | Exception | Stock falls below safety stock | Review supply, safety stock value and whether demand changed. |
PldOrd | MD04 element | Planned order | Created by MRP. Convert to a production order or purchase requisition. |
PrdOrd | MD04 element | Production order | Receipt element. Check release status and dates. |
PurReq | MD04 element | Purchase requisition | Convert to a PO through purchasing, or delete if not needed. |
POitem | MD04 element | Purchase order item | Confirmed external receipt. Check delivery date against need. |
SchAgrRel | MD04 element | Scheduling agreement release | Delivery schedule line from a scheduling agreement. |
Reserv. | MD04 element | Reservation | Manual or maintenance reservation that consumes stock. |

IndReq | MD04 element | Independent requirement | Planned independent demand from a demand program. |
CusOrd | MD04 element | Customer order (sales order) | Sales order schedule line demand. Check delivery dates and confirmed quantities. |
OrdRes | MD04 element | Order reservation | Component reservation on a production or maintenance order. |
Stock | MD04 element | Plant stock at the start of the list | Unrestricted use stock available for planning. |
SafeSt | MD04 element | Safety stock | Shown as a requirement or as a level. Maintained in the material master. |
MD04 | Transaction | Stock/requirements list for one material | The main view. Shows the dynamic list with receipts, issues and exceptions. |
MD05 | Transaction | MRP list for one material | Static result of the last MRP run, not live. |
MD06 | Transaction | Collective display of MRP lists | Use for a controller or plant wide list of materials. |
MD07 | Transaction | Collective display of stock/requirements lists | Dynamic collective view across materials. |
MD01 | Transaction | MRP run for the plant | Total planning run. Often scheduled as a background job. |
MD02 | Transaction | MRP run for a single material with BOM levels | Use for multi level planning of one material. |
MD03 | Transaction | MRP run for a single level, single material | Use for a one material test or re-run. |
MD11 | Transaction | Create planned order | Manual planned order creation. |
MD12 | Transaction | Change planned order | Firm, change quantity or dates. |
MD16 | Transaction | Collective display of planned orders | List planned orders and delete or convert in one pass. |

How to use the reference
Open MD04 for a material and look at the element column. Search here for the abbreviation, such as PldOrd or DepReq, to confirm what it is and what action it implies. Use the transaction rows to decide whether you need MD04, MD05 or the collective lists. Export the table to Excel to give new planners a cheat sheet or to add your own local notes.
- Search by abbreviation or by exception number
- Read the What to do column before changing anything
- Export for onboarding new planners
How MRP creates exception messages
After the planning run, MRP compares receipts with requirements by date. If a receipt is later than the requirement, it flags reschedule in (10). If it is earlier than needed, it flags reschedule out (15). If a receipt has no requirement, it flags cancel (20). Safety stock violations raise 96. Reschedule proposals are limited by rescheduling horizons set in MRP configuration, so a missing message does not always mean everything is on time.
MD04 versus MD05 versus MD07
MD04 is the live stock and requirements list for a material and reflects changes made after the last run. MD05 shows the MRP list as it was when the run finished. MD06 and MD07 are collective displays for many materials, using MRP lists and stock requirements lists. Planners use MD07 to find what needs attention and MD04 to fix it.
Common mistakes
Acting on MD05 data after the situation changed gives wrong answers. Cancelling because of a 20 message without checking forecast or planning time fence demand leads to shortages later. Ignoring 96 messages for months usually means safety stock is out of date.
- Prefer MD04 for decisions, MD05 for audit
- Check time fences before cancelling
- Review safety stock values when 96 repeats
Frequently Asked Questions
What does exception message 10 mean in SAP?
Exception 10 is reschedule in. A receipt such as a purchase order or production order is dated later than the requirement it covers, so MRP proposes bringing it forward. Whether you can depends on the supplier or shop floor.
What is the difference between MD04 and MD05?
MD04 is the dynamic stock and requirements list and shows current data. MD05 is the MRP list from the last planning run and does not change until MRP runs again. Use MD04 for daily decisions.
Why do I see cancel process (20) on a valid order?
MRP found no requirement for the receipt in the horizon it looked at. Demand may be outside the planning time fence, in another MRP area or not yet entered. Check before cancelling.
Can I customize exception messages?
Yes. Exception groups and the messages active for a material are controlled in Customizing and via the MRP group and material master settings. Use MD06 to confirm what your system raises.
