What Is SAP VA01 (Create Sales Order)?
Also known as: VA01, SAP sales order, VA02, VA03
Definition
VA01 is the SAP SD transaction that creates a sales order. The order is entered within a sales area, runs pricing and an availability check, and starts the document flow to delivery (VL01N) and billing (VF01).
SAP VA01 (Create Sales Order) Explained
A sales order in SAP is created for a sales area, which is the combination of sales organization, distribution channel and division. The order type (OR for a standard order, QT for a quotation, CS for consignment, RE for returns) controls document flow, number ranges and which follow-up documents are allowed. VA02 changes and VA03 displays the order.
Each line item has an item category determined from the order type and the material's item category group (for example TAN for a standard item). Each item can have several schedule lines with confirmed quantities and dates. The availability check, by default driven by the checking group and ATP logic on the material master MRP 3 view, decides what can be confirmed, and can trigger backorder processing in V_V2.
Pricing runs the condition technique: condition types such as PR00 (price), K007 (discount) and MWST (tax) are selected through the pricing procedure and condition records (VK11). Credit checks, output determination and incompletion checks run at save. Header data is stored in VBAK and items in VBAP, with schedule lines in VBEP.
The order is the first document in the order to cash chain: order, outbound delivery (VL01N, table LIKP and LIPS), goods issue (movement 601), and billing document (VF01, table VBRK and VBRP) that posts revenue to FI. The document flow table VBFA links every step, so the full trail can be reconstructed from any document.
Why It Matters
- Delivery dates promised in VA01 are the customer-facing commitment, so ATP and schedule line logic directly affect on-time delivery.
- Pricing errors at order entry become invoice disputes and revenue leakage later.
- Order data feeds MRP as independent requirements, so order quality shapes the production and purchasing plan.
- Most EDI and portal integrations create orders through the same logic, using the ORDERS IDoc or BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2.
In Practice
A customer orders 200 units at a list price of 50 USD with a 10 percent contract discount. VA01 proposes 45 USD net per unit through PR00 and K007, and the availability check confirms 150 units today and 50 units in nine days from planned production. The order holds two schedule lines, and the delivery created in VL01N only picks the first 150 until the rest is available.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sales area in SAP?
A sales area is the combination of sales organization, distribution channel and division. It determines pricing, partner functions, order types and which customers can buy which materials.
Why does VA01 show a different delivery date than expected?
The delivery date comes from the availability check, which combines lead times, replenishment lead time, transportation and loading times, and available stock or planned receipts for the checking group.
Which tables hold sales order data?
VBAK holds the header, VBAP the items and VBEP the schedule lines. VBFA stores the document flow to deliveries and invoices.

ATP (Available to Promise)
ATP (available to promise) is the portion of inventory and scheduled production not yet committed to existing customer orders, calculated by date so order entry can quote a delivery a customer can rely on.
CTP (Capable to Promise)
CTP (capable to promise) is an order promising method that goes beyond available inventory by simulating whether required material and work center capacity can be obtained in time, returning a delivery date the plant can actually achieve.
MPS (Master Production Schedule)
An MPS (master production schedule) is the time-phased statement of which end items a plant will produce, in what quantities, and in which periods. It is the anchor demand input MRP explodes into component requirements.
EDI 850 Purchase Order
The EDI 850 is the ANSI X12 transaction set used to transmit a purchase order electronically from a buyer to a supplier, carrying header terms, ship-to and bill-to parties, and line item details such as quantity, price, and product identifiers.
Demand Planning
Demand planning is the process of forecasting future customer demand by combining statistical analysis of shipment history with sales, marketing, and customer intelligence, producing the consensus demand signal that drives master scheduling and MRP.
