How to add Slack to Infor SyteLine
Short answer
Build a Slack app with slash commands, interactive messages and an Events API endpoint, backed by a service that talks to SyteLine through the IDO REST service. Alerts come from Application Event System handlers or ION, and button clicks go back as IDO method calls after a user check.
Slack tends to show up in SyteLine companies that are a bit unusual: engineering-led shops, private-equity portfolio companies standardizing on a modern stack, or sites where a technical operations team runs production. They want chat-based visibility into the ERP without teaching everyone another screen.
Slack's strength for ERP work is the slash command and the threaded alert. A planner can type a command, a supervisor can see a stop-ship alert in a channel, and the discussion that follows sits right under the alert. The weakness is that Slack has no idea who someone is in SyteLine, so the identity layer is yours to build.
This page describes a clean, small design that you can ship in phases: read-only commands first, then channel alerts, then approvals with write-back.
What teams use it for
Slash command item lookup
Typing /syteline item 10-4412 returns description, on-hand by warehouse, open demand and next supply using item, location and PO IDOs, formatted as a compact message.
Job status from the shop floor channel
Supervisors ask for a job number and see current operation, quantity complete and any held material from the job and job-route IDOs.
Low inventory and stockout alerts
When on-hand falls below reorder for a critical item, an alert posts to the buyers channel with open POs and the vendor's lead time.
Interactive PO release approvals
A manager approves a PO from a Block Kit message and the choice is recorded in SyteLine against their mapped user.
Customer order hold notices
Orders going on credit or compliance hold notify the owning sales rep in a direct message with a link to the record.
Daily on-time-delivery snapshot
A scheduled query posts yesterday's shipments against promise dates with the top late lines, ready for discussion in the thread.
Infor SyteLine (CloudSuite Industrial) integration surface
- IDO REST service: the primary read and write interface, including load collections with filters and method invocation for business logic. Slack commands translate directly into these calls.
- Application Event System (AES): event handlers on IDOs and forms can trigger outbound HTTP or stored procedure actions when records change.
- ION API Gateway and BODs on CloudSuite Industrial or Infor OS deployments: OAuth2 access with service accounts and event publishing, exact message names depending on version.
- SQL Server read replicas or reporting views for expensive aggregations like on-time-delivery that you do not want hitting the transactional IDO layer.
- Custom user-defined fields on the PO, order or item to hold Slack channel IDs, thread timestamps or notification preferences.
How it works
- 1
Create the Slack app
Define scopes for commands, chat:write and interactivity, use Socket Mode if you cannot publish a public endpoint, otherwise a request URL with signature verification.
- 2
Build the backend that fronts SyteLine
A small service holds SyteLine service credentials and exposes a handful of functions: get item, get job, get PO, approve PO. Slack never sees the credentials.
- 3
Implement user mapping
Match Slack users to SyteLine users by verified email, store the mapping, and refuse commands from unmapped users.
- 4
Add read-only slash commands first
Each command runs a bounded IDO query with a property list and row cap, then formats a short reply. Respond within three seconds and use a delayed response for slower queries.
- 5
Emit alerts from SyteLine
Use AES handlers, an ION subscription, or a scheduled query for conditions that are not events (like stockout risk), and route to channels by site or product line.
- 6
Add interactive approvals
Block Kit buttons carry a signed payload. On click, verify the Slack signature, resolve the user, check authority in SyteLine, then invoke the method.
Example flows
Critical item stockout alert
Trigger: A scheduled check finds on-hand below safety stock on a flagged item.
- Query item and location IDOs for on-hand and allocated.
- Join open PO lines for the item to get next receipt dates.
- Post to the buyers channel with item, shortfall, next supply and vendor.
- A buyer clicks Expedite, which opens a thread and notes the request on the PO line.
Result: Buyers see shortage risk before the line stops, with the supply picture right in the alert.
Order status via slash command
Trigger: A sales rep types a command with a customer order number.
- Backend verifies the Slack signature and maps the user.
- It loads the order header and lines through the customer order IDOs.
- It checks that the user is allowed to see the customer's site.
- It replies with line status, promise dates and any holds.
Result: Reps get an answer in seconds without opening SyteLine, and unauthorized lookups are refused.
Keeping data on-prem
Slack's cloud cannot reach an internal SyteLine server, and it should not. Use Socket Mode so your backend opens an outbound connection to Slack and you publish no inbound endpoint, or place the request URL behind a reverse proxy in a DMZ. The backend reaches the IDO REST service on the internal network. Message content is stored by Slack, so for controlled or export-regulated data keep messages to identifiers and status. If you want AI summarization of alerts, run a local model and send Slack only the finished summary text.
Security checklist
- Verify Slack request signatures and timestamps on every request.
- Map Slack users to SyteLine users explicitly and apply SyteLine's own site and role limits before returning data.
- Use least-privilege SyteLine credentials, with separate read and write service accounts.
- Keep alerts about costs, margins or customer pricing out of public channels.
- Log commands, approvals and failures with Slack user ID, SyteLine user and document key.
Ways to get it done
No-code automation platform with scheduled exports
Effort: A day or two, with limited interactivity.
Basic scheduled digests where SyteLine data is already exported to a database or sheet.
Custom Slack app on the IDO REST service
Effort: Two to four weeks for read-only plus one approval flow.
Slash commands and approvals with proper identity.
Partner build with Netray
Effort: Scoped after confirming hosting, version and access model.
When you want a conversational assistant in Slack backed by a private model and audited ERP tools.
Pitfalls
- !Running heavy queries inside the three second response window instead of acknowledging and responding later.
- !Letting any Slack user run commands because the app was installed workspace-wide.
- !Posting too many alerts so channels get muted and the important one is missed.
- !Hard-coding channel IDs instead of mapping by site or product line in a table.
- !Writing to SyteLine tables directly instead of calling IDO methods, which bypasses validation.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Slack app for Infor SyteLine?
Not one I can point to. Infor's own collaboration and notification tooling varies by version and entitlement, so check what you already license. Most teams build a small Slack app over the IDO REST service or ION.
Can Slack trigger SyteLine transactions?
Yes, through IDO methods called by your backend after identity and authority checks. Start with approvals and notes, and keep inventory or financial postings behind more controlled flows.
How do we keep SyteLine off the internet?
Use Slack Socket Mode so your backend makes an outbound connection, or publish only the backend through a reverse proxy. SyteLine's application server stays on the internal network.
What data should never go in Slack?
Controlled technical data, customer pricing in wide channels, and anything your contracts restrict from third-party SaaS storage. Send identifiers and status, and link back to SyteLine for the details.
Can we use an AI model to answer questions in Slack?
Yes. The model should call a fixed set of read-only SyteLine tools under the asker's permissions. You can run it on a private model server and keep prompts and ERP data inside your environment.
