SlackInfor XA (on IBM i) Agent view

How to build a Slack app for Infor XA

Short answer

A Slack app for XA is a small service that reads Db2 for i through read-only views, answers slash commands, posts interactive alerts, and sends approved actions back through stored procedures. The IBM i is never exposed to Slack, which only calls your service.

Slack tends to show up at XA companies through engineering, quality, IT and newer commercial teams rather than the plant floor. They want to type a part number and get on-hand, open orders and next receipt without asking a planner who has an emulator session open.

That makes the Slack integration look different from Teams or WhatsApp. It is mostly about on-demand lookup, alert subscription and quick handoffs, with approvals as a secondary use. Because Slack has strong developer tooling, a few well-chosen slash commands deliver most of the value.

As with any XA integration, the discipline is on the IBM i side: read-only views, one narrow service profile, and write-back only via supported programs.

What teams use it for

/item slash command

Type /item and a part number to get description, on-hand by warehouse, open demand and open supply, with the source view named.

/order status lookups

Sales support checks a customer order's lines, ship dates and last status without opening XA.

Engineering change notices

When an ECN is released, post affected parts and open orders to the engineering channel with a button to assign review.

Shortage war room

A daily post lists parts that will stop production this week, and a thread per part tracks the action and owner.

Quote request intake

A Slack form from sales creates a request row for a cost estimator, who answers back in the thread.

Infor XA (on IBM i) integration surface

  • Db2 for i is reachable by JDBC (JTOpen) or ODBC. Build SQL views that expose only the columns Slack needs. Exact XA file layouts differ per release and per modification, so define views from your own dictionary.
  • Journal or trigger-based events for ECNs, status changes and shortages. A scheduled SQL query that writes to an outbox table is the simplest option.
  • SQL stored procedures written in SQL PL or wrapping RPG for the few write actions you allow, such as creating a note, assigning an owner or acknowledging a hold.
  • IBM i authority: a dedicated service profile that has SELECT on views and EXECUTE on procedures only.
  • Optionally, an IFS directory for dropping CSV extracts if Slack users request a file and you generate it on demand.

How it works

  1. 1

    Define the command set

Start with three or four slash commands such as /item, /order and /shortage. Resist a generic ask-anything command until the views are stable.

  2. 2

    Create the Slack app

Use the Slack API console, enable slash commands, interactivity and event subscriptions, and install it to one workspace. Use Socket Mode if you cannot expose an inbound URL.

  3. 3

    Build read-only views

Create Db2 for i views that join the XA tables you need and apply plant or company filters, so the service never writes raw SQL against base files.

  4. 4

    Verify requests and respond

Check the Slack signing secret on every request, respond within three seconds with an acknowledgement and post the real result asynchronously.

  5. 5

    Subscribe channels to alerts

Keep a subscription table mapping alert types to channels. The outbox worker posts using that table.

  6. 6

    Add interactive actions

Where needed, buttons call stored procedures with a mapped XA user. Update the message with the result.

Example flows

Quick part check

Trigger: An engineer types /item followed by a part number.

  1. The service verifies the Slack signature and maps the user to an allowed role.
  2. It queries the item view and the supply and demand view.
  3. It posts a compact result with on-hand, allocated, open POs and the next receipt date.

Result: The answer arrives in seconds and no one touched the green screen.

ECN release

Trigger: An engineering change is released in XA.

  1. A trigger writes an outbox row with the ECN and parent part.
  2. The worker queries where-used and open work orders.
  3. It posts the impact summary in the engineering channel with a Claim review button.

Result: The affected work orders are visible the minute the change is released.

Keeping data on-prem

Slack is a hosted service, so what you can keep on-prem is XA, the gateway and any language model. Use Socket Mode so the service makes an outbound connection to Slack and you open no inbound firewall rule to the IBM i network. Messages will contain business data, so restrict channels, avoid pasting controlled technical data, and check whether your contracts permit Slack at all. If you want a free-form assistant, run it on a local model and have the gateway post only the final answer.

Security checklist

  • Verify the Slack signing secret and timestamp on every inbound call to block replays.
  • Map each Slack user ID to an XA role and enforce per-command permissions, not just channel membership.
  • Never expose cost or margin fields through views used in shared channels.
  • Use a least-privilege IBM i profile and keep tokens in a secret store.
  • Log every slash command and action with the Slack user, XA role, and query.

Ways to get it done

Workflow builder with scheduled CSV or webhook posts

Effort: Days.

One-way alerts only.

In-house Slack app on views and procedures

Effort: Typically three to six weeks.

Lookups and light approvals, with a developer who knows Db2 for i.

Netray with an XA partner

Effort: A pilot of a few weeks, extended command by command.

You want a natural-language assistant over XA data in Slack on a private model.

Pitfalls

  • !Slash commands that take more than three seconds without acknowledging will appear to fail.
  • !Public channels leak data. Default responses to ephemeral messages for sensitive lookups.
  • !Views that join large XA files without filters can slow Db2 for i for the whole partition.
  • !Letting users type free SQL or free filters invites accidental full table scans.
  • !Giving Slack the same IBM i profile as an administrator is a common and serious mistake.

Frequently asked questions

Can Slack query Infor XA data in real time?

Yes, by querying read-only Db2 for i views when a slash command runs. Keep result sets small and indexed. For heavy analytics, replicate to a separate store instead of loading the production partition.

Does Slack need a public endpoint on our network?

Not if you use Socket Mode, which connects outbound from your service to Slack. Otherwise you need a reverse proxy for the Slack request URLs, kept outside the IBM i network segment.

Can Slack post changes back to XA?

Only for a short list of actions, via stored procedures that wrap supported XA logic and carry a mapped user ID. Direct file updates are risky and generally unsupported.

Is there a ready-made Slack connector for XA?

Not one I would assume. Some integration platforms offer generic IBM i or JDBC connectors that can feed Slack, but check each vendor's current catalogue because it changes and XA coverage varies.

Can we use an AI assistant inside Slack?

Yes. A language model can translate a question into a call to your approved views, then summarise results. Use a locally hosted model if your data cannot leave your control.
