Valve Manufacturers Association (VMA): valve standards, testing and ERP for valve makers

The Valve Manufacturers Association of America is the US trade association for valve manufacturers, serving the industrial valve and actuator industry. Valve makers work to API, ASME and MSS standards with heavy testing and traceability duties. This page covers the standards and the ERP, quoting and private AI questions valve plants face.

Who the members are

  • Oil and gas valves

Gate, globe, check, ball and plug valves for upstream, pipeline and refinery service, built to API standards with pressure testing and material certification.

  • Process and chemical valves

Valves and control valves for chemical, pharmaceutical and food processing, with special alloys, linings and low emission requirements.

  • Power generation and nuclear

Large valves for power plants with strict quality programs, including ASME nuclear quality requirements for qualified suppliers.

  • Water and building services

Butterfly, gate and check valves for waterworks and building systems, with potable water and fire protection approvals.

  • Actuation and flow control

Actuators, positioners and control valve packages configured to order, mixing mechanical, pneumatic and electronic components.

The ecosystem

  • Valve Manufacturers Association of America association

The US trade association for manufacturers of valves and related products, representing the industry on standards, trade and regulatory issues.

  • API valve standards standard body

American Petroleum Institute standards include API 6D for pipeline valves, API 600 and 602 for steel gate valves, and API 598 for valve inspection and testing.

  • ASME B16.34 standard body

The ASME standard for flanged, threaded and welding end valves, covering pressure temperature ratings, materials and testing.

  • Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) standard body

A separate standards body publishing MSS SP standards for valve marking, testing and design, widely used with valve specifications.

  • ISO 15848 standard body

The ISO standard series for measuring and testing fugitive emissions from industrial valves.

  • Valve World Americas trade show

An industrial valve conference and expo held in Houston, Texas.

  • Flowserve manufacturer

A global flow control company with valve, pump and seal businesses, headquartered in the Dallas, Texas area.

What valve makers produce and for whom

Valve manufacturers build products across sizes, pressure classes, materials and end connections, selling to EPC contractors, oil and gas operators, utilities, process plants and distributors. Many orders are engineered to a customer data sheet with specific trim, coatings and testing.

Castings and forgings from outside foundries, machined in house and assembled and tested, make up most of the supply chain, so heat lot and certificate tracking is essential.

Quoting and estimating realities

Valve quoting depends on size, pressure class, body and trim materials, end connections, actuation, testing and documentation packages. Customers frequently send a large project bid list with hundreds of line items against tight deadlines.

Foundry lead times and raw material surcharges can drive delivery dates, so a quote must connect to realistic supply information, not just standard cost.

ERP and systems commonly seen

Valve makers often run SAP, Infor SyteLine or CloudSuite Industrial, Epicor, Oracle NetSuite or Plex, and product configurators for engineered variants. Smaller shops may use JobBOSS or Global Shop Solutions.

Typical pain points are configure to order logic, material certification matched to each serial number, and compiling data books (dossiers) with test reports, certificates and drawings for each order.

Where private AI helps and where it does not

Private AI on-prem is useful for reading customer data sheets and specifications, pulling matching past quotes, checking document packages against purchase order requirements and answering order status questions from the ERP. Keeping specs and drawings inside the company network matters for project confidentiality.

It should not decide pressure ratings, material suitability or code compliance. Those remain engineering decisions, and the AI output must be reviewed by qualified staff before anything is sent to a customer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Valve Manufacturers Association?

The Valve Manufacturers Association of America is a US trade association for companies that make valves and related flow control products. It supports the industry on standards, trade, regulatory and market issues.

Which standards apply to industrial valves?

Common references are API 6D, API 600, API 602 and API 598, ASME B16.34, and MSS SP standards. Specific orders add customer specifications, NACE MR0175 or ISO 15156 for sour service, and fugitive emission tests such as ISO 15848.

What is a valve data book?

A data book or dossier is the document package delivered with a valve order, typically including material certificates, test reports, inspection records, drawings and certificates of conformance. Assembling it by hand from many sources is time consuming without ERP and document integration.

Can AI help valve manufacturers?

It can help read specifications, find similar past quotes and check documentation packages, when run privately on company data. It cannot approve designs or ratings, which stay with engineering and quality staff.
