Association: Gaskets, seals and sealing products

Fluid Sealing Association (FSA): sealing product makers, standards and the ERP problems they share

The Fluid Sealing Association is a trade association of manufacturers of sealing products such as gaskets, compression packing, mechanical seals and expansion joints. It publishes technical guidance and works with the European Sealing Association. For manufacturers in this space the daily ERP problems are material traceability, many cut-to-size and engineered variants, and quoting against customer specifications.

Who the members are

  • Gaskets and gasket materials

Sheet, spiral wound, kammprofile, ring joint and cut gaskets made to flange standards for chemical, refining, power and general industry, often from stocked sheet cut to order.

  • Compression packing

Braided packings for valves and pumps in materials such as graphite, PTFE and aramid, supplied by length, ring set or custom cut.

  • Mechanical seals

Pump seals and cartridge assemblies built and repaired for process pumps, where configuration and materials of construction vary by application.

  • Expansion joints

Non-metallic and metallic expansion joints engineered for piping and duct systems, usually quoted and built against project specifications.

  • Distribution and repair

Distributors and service centers stock, cut, assemble and repair sealing products for local plants with short lead times.

The ecosystem

  • Fluid Sealing Association association

Trade association of sealing product manufacturers, organized into technical divisions for product groups such as gaskets, compression packing, mechanical seals and expansion joints.

  • European Sealing Association (ESA) association

European counterpart with which FSA cooperates on technical publications and industry issues.

  • ASME B16.20 and B16.21 standard

Standards covering metallic and non-metallic gaskets for pipe flanges.

  • API 682 standard

Petroleum industry standard for shaft sealing systems for centrifugal and rotary pumps.

  • ASME PCC-1 standard

Guidelines for pressure boundary bolted flange joint assembly.

  • Pumps and Systems magazine publication

Trade publication in which FSA has run a long-standing technical column on sealing topics.

What FSA is and who uses it

FSA is a manufacturers' association. Its value to a buyer or plant engineer is mostly technical: guidance on selecting and installing gaskets, packing and seals, and on the standards that apply. It does not certify products, so a product's suitability still rests on the maker's test data and your application.

Searches that land here come from engineers looking for sealing guidance, buyers looking for member manufacturers and small makers deciding whether membership is worth it. The ERP and quoting issues below apply whichever of those you are.

Traceability and cut-to-size reality

Many sealing products start as sheet, strip, rod or braided material in stock and become a part only when cut or assembled to an order. The ERP needs to track the source lot, remaining usable area or length after each cut and the certificate that follows the material, or the shop cannot answer a customer recall or audit question.

Offcuts, nesting and yield matter to margin. Systems that treat each cut gasket as a plain make-to-order item without yield tracking usually understate material cost on quotes.

  • Source lot recorded on every gasket or seal shipped
  • Remaining sheet or length updated after each cut
  • Certificates linked to material lots, not just orders
  • Customer-specific material approvals checked at order entry

Quoting engineered seals and expansion joints

Engineered products such as cartridge seals and expansion joints depend on temperature, pressure, media, shaft or pipe dimensions and customer specifications. Estimators work from datasheets and prior jobs, and the real risk is quoting a configuration that differs from an earlier order in a way the item master does not capture.

Storing the configuration, materials of construction and the specification revision against each quote and order lets staff find a comparable job quickly. A private model with retrieval over past quotes and datasheets can speed that search, though the engineer still approves the selection.

ERP fit and where AI helps

Sealing manufacturers range from small cut-gasket shops to engineered product makers, and the ERP choice reflects that, from small business systems to Epicor, Infor SyteLine, NetSuite or Plex class products. The right system is the one that handles lot tracking, configured items and cut-to-size inventory without heavy customization.

Private AI is most useful for searching quotes, datasheets and ERP history in plain language, and for answering inventory and traceability questions. If your existing ERP's reporting already answers those, a simpler tool is enough. Keep customer specifications and pricing on infrastructure you control.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Fluid Sealing Association do?

FSA is a trade association of manufacturers of sealing products including gaskets, compression packing, mechanical seals and expansion joints. It publishes technical guidance and educational material, works with the European Sealing Association and represents industry interests. It does not certify individual products.

Which standards apply to flange gaskets?

ASME B16.20 covers metallic gaskets for pipe flanges, including spiral wound and ring joint types, and ASME B16.21 covers non-metallic flat gaskets. Bolted joint assembly practice is covered by ASME PCC-1. Your project specification may add requirements, so confirm with the customer.

What does API 682 cover?

API 682 is the petroleum industry standard for shaft sealing systems for centrifugal and rotary pumps. It defines seal categories, arrangements and testing expectations used heavily in refining and chemical plants. It applies where a purchaser specifies it, not to every pump seal.

Why is traceability hard for gasket makers?

Gaskets are often cut from large sheets or strip, so one source lot feeds many orders. The ERP must record which lot each cut came from and the remaining stock, or tying a shipped gasket back to its material certificate becomes a manual search.
