Where Estimator Time Goes in a Rubber Shop
A typical custom rubber RFQ arrives as a PDF print, sometimes a STEP file, a spec reference, a volume range and a request for tooling cost. The estimator identifies the polymer and durometer, checks the spec, estimates part volume, decides on process and cavity count, guesses cure time, adds flash and scrap, prices tooling and secondary operations, and adds margin. Much of the time goes into hunting for the last similar job.
In shops with one or two estimators, quotes queue for days, and a slow response can lose the job to a competitor who answered first.
What the AI Does and What It Does Not
The assistant extracts structured fields from the print and RFQ, with citations to the page, and searches your ERP and quote history for comparable parts by polymer, durometer, size and process. It surfaces actual cycle times, scrap rates, deflash labor and margin from those jobs and drafts a cost build. The estimator checks each assumption, adjusts for judgment calls and approves.
It does not invent material prices, guess cure times without history or send a quote on its own.
- Extract polymer, durometer, spec, tolerance class, inserts and post cure from the print
- Match similar past jobs and show actual cure, scrap and labor
- Draft cost build with source links for each number
- Flag unusual requirements such as bonded inserts or tight tolerances
Data You Need Before It Works
The quality of a draft depends on the quality of your history. You need job routings with real cycle times, material usage and scrap, quote records tied to part attributes, and a compound price list. If cure times in the ERP are copied from an old standard and never updated, the AI will repeat that error.
A short data cleanup on the top 100 part families usually pays off. Document your costing rules, such as flash allowances by process and tooling amortization policy, so the assistant follows your method rather than a generic one.

Rubber Part RFQ Review and Quotation Checklist
Thirty-plus checks to run on a molded rubber RFQ so compound, tolerance, tooling, process and commercial risks are caught before the quote goes out.
Privacy, Deployment and Customer Data
Customer prints are often confidential, and defense or medical work can carry export or regulatory limits. Running open-weight models on your own servers, with retrieval over your ERP and documents, keeps prints inside your network and lets you enforce access by customer or program. Netray deploys this on-prem or in a private cloud, with the ERP integration read-only by default and human approval on anything that writes back.
You remain responsible for your own compliance program, and the architecture is designed so you can meet it.
When AI Quoting Is Not Worth It
If you quote under a handful of new parts a month, or most of your business is repeat orders at stable prices, the setup effort will not pay back, and a good spreadsheet is enough. If your job history is thin or unreliable, fix the data first. AI quoting pays off for shops with many custom RFQs, multiple estimators with inconsistent methods, or slow response times that cost wins.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI read rubber part drawings for quoting?
It can extract much of the information from prints, such as material callouts, durometer, tolerances, notes and part dimensions, especially from clean PDFs, and cite where each came from. Poor scans and unusual formats need human review, and the estimator still validates every value before a quote goes out.
Will AI quoting replace my estimator?
No. It speeds up the retrieval and first-pass build, while the estimator applies judgment on risk, capacity, margin and customer relationship. The goal is more quotes per estimator with more consistent method, not an unattended quote.
Is it safe to put customer prints into an AI tool?
It depends on where the AI runs. Public cloud tools may violate customer NDAs or export rules. A private deployment on your own servers keeps documents inside your network under your access controls, which is the safer pattern for confidential or controlled prints.
